Grade: 9 th

Course Description: Integrated Math 1 Support is designed to provide you the foundation necessary to succeed in Integrated Math 1 and future math courses. The class focuses on filling in gaps in understanding and reviewing important concepts from previous grades. It also helps students get a deeper understanding of the topics covered in their Integrated Math 1 class. The first half of the course focuses on the number system, functions, ratios, and algebra. The second half of the course is focused on Geometry and Statistics. Through this class students will gain a deeper understanding of mathematics and gain:

1.

A view that mathematics makes sense: it offers ways of understanding and thinking; it is not just collection of definitions, algorithms, and/or theorems to memorize and apply.

2.

A proclivity to put time and thought into using mathematics to grasp and solve unfamiliar problems that may not match examples the student has seen before. Students should find patterns, make and test conjectures, try multiple representations (e.g., symbolic, geometric, graphical) and approaches (e.g., deduction, mathematical induction, linking to known results), analyze simple examples, make abstractions and generalizations, and verify that solutions are correct, approximate, or reasonable, as appropriate.

3.

A view that mathematics approximates reality and mathematical models can guide our understanding of the world around us.

4.

An awareness of special goals of mathematics, such as clarity and brevity (e.g., via symbols and precise definitions), parsimony (removing irrelevant detail), universality (claims must be true in all possible cases, not just most or all known cases), and objectivity (students should ask

“Why?” and accept answers based on reason, not authority).

5.

Confidence and fluency in handling formulas and computational algorithms: understanding their motivation and design, predicting approximate outcomes, and computing them -- mentally, on paper, or with technology, as appropriate. Mathematics is a language, fluency in it is a basic skill, and fluency in computation is one key component.

Expected Student Outcomes/Expectations: For this Mathematics 1 Support course students will be focusing on many important mathematical topics and standards. BY the end of the course, students will be expected to show an understanding of all the standards covered in the class.

Required Materials:

-Pencil (for all class work and homework)

-Colored Pen (used for test corrections)

-Highlighter

-Eraser

- 1 Spiral Notebook (for Notes)

-3 small pocket Folders (Assessments, In-class work, and Homework)

- loose leaf lined paper (at least 50 sheets to start and more as needed)

-A positive attitude

- A willingness to work hard in class and outside of class

Student Expectations:

-Be seated and prepared for the day’s lesson before the bell rings

-Work and think HARD everyday

-Respect everyone in the room at all times

-Take responsibility for your own learning

Assessment Policy: In this class, assessments are a key aspect. Assessment is a collaborative process that involves looking at your assessment results and analyzing your understanding of the material. You will then make decisions regarding what next steps need to be taken and what goals need to be set to move your learning toward mastery. Mastery is measured by your ability to show what you have

learned on a problem or task. You are expected to actively participate in the assessment process by collaboratively working with me to track your progress towards mastery and to design a learning plan that supports achieving your goals. Assessments will be given a rubric score that shows your level of understanding of the standard. The levels are given below.

LEVELS:

Level 4- ADVANCED: I can show ALL work and I can justify ALL my work with words.

Level 3-PROFICIENT: I can show ALL work, but I can’t always justify it.

Level 2-BASIC: I can do this, but I need notes to double-check my work.

Level 1-NOT PASSING (NP) I have no idea what I am doing and I cannot justify my work.

To help students achieve mastery, reassessment is available for all students. Students may reassess on any standard in order to improve their grade for that standard. In order to reassess though, there are some expectations. To reassess students must:

1.

Reassess within 6 weeks of the original assessment

2.

Complete all homework given for that unit

3.

Attend at least one tutoring session

4.

Complete an additional assignment related to the standard

5.

Receive a parent and teacher signature verifying that you have made an effort to better understand the standard

6. Students must make arrangements to reassess at least one day prior to reassessing

**Failure is part of learning, and I expect you to work toward success at all times; consequently a grade of incomplete will be assigned when you have yet to achieve basic proficiency on an assignment/task.

No curving will be done. Extra credit will not be given. **

Active Class Practice: You must come to class prepared to learn and improve your understanding of the material covered. Putting in your best effort during class discussions, class practice, and presentations is important for you to be successful in class. You must attempt every problem in class and for homework and you need to use every resource available to master the topics covered in class.

To help you reach mastery you should:

 Use resources that include: your notes, in-class textbooks, tutorial videos, peers, teacher, online resources

 Use digital notebooks and other tools that gather evidence of learning and growth over time and use this knowledge to guide your learning

 Revise your work based on teacher and peer feedback (written and oral)

 Confer with teachers and peers about your work

 Spend ample time practicing problems in order to gain mastery of the concepts.

 Use rubrics to guide, self-assess, and revise your work and work products

Consequences – Positive and Negative: You will be acknowledged and positively rewarded for demonstrating effective learning skills. If you are struggling either behaviorally or academically in class there will be steps taken to help you correct the problem and succeed in class. My first contact will be directly to you to develop an action plan for success. I will contact your parents to participate in the action plan and support your success if you continue to struggle.

 For serious behavior issues, we will take the following steps:

1.

Verbal warning in class

2.

Action Plan/Detention: written response to behavior including the solution and parent contact

3.

Conference with teacher and/or parent

4. Referral to the office

Final advice for success:

I am excited to begin this year with you in Common Core Integrated Math I Support. I am here to help you succeed in this class as well as your other classes. My goal is to help fill in any gaps in understanding from previous grades and to help you master all the content presented in Integrated I.

Do not hesitate to ask questions or seek my help the moment you start to become confused. Always believe in yourself and your ability to succeed. If you work hard and have a positive attitude you will have the best chance for success in class. This is going to be a great year!
