Sudan Institute joins Google, The World Bank, and UNOSAT to Map

On April 28, 2011 more than 70 participants representing Google, The World Bank, UN
Satellite Operation (UNOSAT), Sudanese diaspora , and mapping volunteers gathered
at the World Bank Headquarters to launch an initiative sponsored by Google to develop
a better map for Southern Sudan

The goal of this event was to engage and train members of the Sudanese diaspora, and
others who have lived and worked in the region, to use Google Map Maker for sharing
their local knowledge, on roads, schools, hospitals, water, and more to help create a
comprehensive map of the region. The event was well received, and several key areas
in Southern Sudan (Yei, Loka, Mundri, Yambio, Renk, Kapoeta, Torit, Nasir, Rumbek,
Yirol, Maridi, Shambe, Chief Jambo, Gogrial) were mapped during the day.
The Sudan Institute was invited to present their experience using Google Maps for the
Sudan Vote Monitor project, and help inspire the Sudanese diaspora in order to
maximize their participation in this important effort.
Future collaboration with Google in this area is planned to continue building this map,
including establishing a local team on the ground among universities and civil society to
sustain this work going forward.
