SUBJECT:
In Memory of Michael G. Hughes, MD, FACEP
WHEREAS, The specialty of emergency medicine lost a dedicated and compassionate physician,
business savvy educator, and dear friend when Michael G. Hughes, MD, FACEP, passed away on September 26,
2015; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hughes graduated magna cum laude from the College of the Holy Cross in 1984 going
on to receive an MBA degree from Boston University; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hughes graduated from the University of Massachusetts Medical School on a Navy
scholarship, attended the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, and then served as Undersea Medical Officer in
Groton, Connecticut as a Lieutenant Commander; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hughes was stationed at Roosevelt Roads Naval Station in Puerto Rico from 1991-1993
as a member of the Naval Special Warfare Unit (Seal Team) Four, and continued in the reserves until his
honorable discharge in 1998; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hughes completed his emergency medicine residency from 1994-1997 at the University
of Chicago where he was Chief Resident and a physician on the Aeromedical Network (UCAN); and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hughes was an emergency physician at Mount Auburn, South Shore, and Cape Cod
Hospitals; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hughes served as President of the Board for the Bridge Over Troubled Water Charity;
and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hughes volunteered at Port-au-Prince University Hospital, Haiti after the 2010
earthquake; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hughes opened his first Health Express Urgent Care Center in 2012 with his partner Dr.
Chris Whelan; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hughes was a dedicated and caring father of two children, Samantha and Max, and
loving husband to his wife, Nina; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hughes had the ability to touch so many lives with his calm reassuring presence and
warm, dry wit; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hughes served as member of the Massachusetts College of Emergency Physicians
(MACEP) where he played an important role as member of the Emergency Medicine Practice Committee and as
an educator for the MACEP Billing and Coding Conference; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Hughes touched so many lives as a physician, educator, philanthropist, mentor,
colleague, friend, and devoted husband, father, brother, and son; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the American College of Emergency Physicians recognizes with gratitude and honor
the contributions made by Michael G. Hughes, MD, FACEP, to the specialty of emergency medicine in
Massachusetts and in his service to our country’s armed forces; and be it further
RESOLVED, That ACEP extends to the family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Hughes our sympathy, our
great sense of sadness and loss, and our gratitude for having been able to share a part of his life.
