The project activities, their necessity and duration:

Cambridge Bay is a Hamlet located in the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut, Canada, and it is the largest stop for passenger and research vessels traversing the Arctic Ocean's Northwest Passage.

Site Location

The Hamlet of Cambridge Bay with a population of approximately 1500 people is located at 69 degrees 7 minutes latitude north and 105 degrees 69 minutes longitude west and is a transportation and administrative centre for the Kitikmeot Region. In relation to other communities, it is located 870km northeast of Yellowknife and 910km northwest of Rankin Inlet (Statistics Canada, 2011).

Cambridge Bay is situated between Dease Strait and Queen Maud Gulf on the southeast coast of Victoria

Island, part of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. To the north of the community is Ferguson Lake

( Inuinnaqtun: Tahiryuaq or Tahikyoak ) which flows into Wellington Bay via the Ekalluk River. About 37km west of the community lies the Finlayson Islands which were surveyed by Sir Richard Collinson on board the Enterprise during his search for Sir John Franklin's lost expedition.

The purpose of the New Tank Farm is to support the Government of Nunavut goal of improving life quality, safety and its presence in Canadian waters at the Arctic region. The location of the New Tank

Farm is to support continued municipal services and is in alignment with the Hamlet’s land use plans.

The New Tank Farm has a target completion date of August 2015 so as to be able to meet the re-supply schedule for 2015 i.e. ready to accept fuel delivery in the first week of September 2015.

The application to the Nunavut Water Board for a Class B Water Licence is to support the hydrostatic testing of the tanks.

Method of transportation:

During the construction and operation phases, the primary means of transportation for material and equipment to the New Tank Farm site will be by barge or airplane. Vehicles will be used to and from the site and the Cambridge Bay Community for transfer, re-supply of goods, movement of personnel and to access other community services. Tanker trucks will be used for: o the transfer of Jet fuel from the New Tank Farm facility to the Cambridge bay Airport o the transfer of diesel and gasoline to the Community

Any structures that will be erected (permanent/ temporary):

Permanent structures that will be erected at the New Tank Farm Facility will include:

Alternatives considered:

None o 2 tanks to store Low Sulphur Diesel Light (LSDL) ; o 2 tanks to store A-1 Jet Fuel; o 1 tank to store Gasoline; o 1 Operator Shelter Building; o 1 Dispenser Building for LDSL and Gasoline; o 1 Dispenser Building for Jet A-1 Fuel; o Re-supply pipeline and sea hose connection.

Long-term developments, the projected outcome of the development for the area and its timeline:

The containment area has been designed for the 20 year horizon. Based on the fuel consumption projections, it is expected that one Low Sulphur Diesel Light (LSDL) tank and one Jet A-1 tank will be added within 10 years after completion of the New Tank Farm Facility.
