KENT PRE-SESSIONAL COURSE IN EAP/
EAP TUTOR JOB DESCRIPTION
Modes of study currently provide credit-bearing and non-credit-bearing EAP and pathway
opportunities for undergraduate and post-graduate students.
Kent International Pathways and CEWL’s objectives play a key role in the University’s
Internationalisation Strategy. The Centre aims to address the linguistic, academic and cultural needs
of international students.
JOB PURPOSE
The purpose of Kent International Pathways’ Pre-sessional EAP Tutor roles is to provide the key
teaching, training, assessment and student support required for the delivery of the University’s Presessional courses, which run from April to September, with four staged course intakes in April, June,
July and August respectively. Students taking the course are preparing for both postgraduate and
undergraduate entry in a wide range of different subject areas. The cohort also comprises a group of
Junior Year abroad Students with particular learning requirements.
The positions will report to the Director of CEWL and the post holders will work most closely with the
Centre’s International Pathways Managers who coordinate the delivery of this course. Appointees will
work and teach alongside some of the Centre’s permanent members of staff. The Course’s pastoral
care will be managed in accordance with the University of Kent’s PASS system which will be
coordinated by CEWL’s Senior Tutor and Student Support Officer.
Due to the complex nature of the Course applicants are kindly asked to ensure that they do not have
any pre-existing leave requirement during their preferred period of employment as this cannot be
facilitated.
THE COURSE
Given the challenging and target-focused nature of the Course, tutors will be required to follow a
structured specification and syllabus, in order to ensure, as far as possible that set materials are
covered and learning outcomes are met.
MARKING AND ASSESSMENT
Post-holders will be required to mark any homework or assessments which form part of the formative
requirements of the course, in addition to the final assessment which takes the form of the Kent
International Test of English (KITE). The hourly teaching rate includes an in-built uplift which is
intended to cover this type of marking and meeting activity.
MEETINGS & CPD SESSIONS
Weekly meetings will be held once a fortnight after teaching finishes and all Pre-sessional teaching
staff are required to attend. There will also be a number of CPD sessions held during the course to
brief staff on University policy and to discuss professionally-related issues. Staff may also be asked to
lead sessions at times. Tutors will also be asked to keep a short reflective EAP journal based on the
needs of the group they have worked with and referring to their group’s particular learning
requirements. This will include:
 Key areas where the tutor feels they have developed and or require development
 The tutor’s approach to realising the syllabus
 Recommendations for syllabus enhancement

A programme of social activity is organised by our Social Events Organiser. These events take place
on Wednesday afternoons and in the evenings. Tutors are welcome to attend where possible, but are
