We are excited for your interest in student leadership at CSU East Bay! In order to serve as a student representative in
the Associated Students, Inc., please read through the attached information and fill out the following application. Please
hand in your application to the Associated Students, Inc. Business Office, located in the Old University Union (UU) 314.
Vacancies on committees may occur throughout the year, thus, applications are accepted year-round. Please

There are many opportunities for leadership within the Associated Students or on University Committees and we
encourage you to apply to areas where you can serve in a capacity tailored to your interests. Please indicate the
committees or areas for which you would like to be considered. We highly encourage you to indicate more than
one choice as some positions may already be occupied at the time you submit this application. Descriptions and
explanations of committees and their mandates can be found on the accompanying pages.
Requirements to serve on ASI and/or University-Wide committees have been established by the ASI and CSU
East Bay: http://www20.csueastbay.edu/sa/files/stdntqualfinalrev1008.doc.There are two types of committees
for which you can apply. ASI Internal Committees are established by code through the bylaws of the ASI.
Appointments for these committees are typically the responsibility of the ASI Executive Committee and the
committee chairs. External Committees are those established by the University within certain divisions or
departments. Appointments for these committees are typically the responsibility of the University after the
Executive Committee provides the external chairs with a list of approved candidates.

Description of Academic Senate, ASI Committees and University Wide Committees
Academic Senate Committees
Committee on Instruction and Curriculum (CIC): (2 positions available; 1 undergraduate + 1 graduate)
Meetings: 1st & 3rd Mondays; 2:00 PM – 3:50 PM
Purpose:
· Makes recommendations to the Academic Senate on graduate and undergraduate curriculum and policies, policies
relating to academic standards, requirements for granting certificates, teaching credentials, honorary and earned
degrees, and honors for scholastic achievement
· Makes recommendations to the Academic Senate on policies regarding probation, dismissal and reinstatement of
students
· Covers graduation requirements (including GE), grading standards, student probation and disqualification, first- and
second-pass registration issues and unit caps
Grade Appeal & Academic Grievance Committee: (1 position)
Meetings: 2nd & 4th Mondays; 2:00 PM – 3:50 PM
Requirements: Student members (two) of the Fairness Committee must have completed at least one quarter at
CSUEB with a minimum of 8 units, have a GPA of at least 2.3 and be enrolled for 7 or more units during the
quarter of service on the Fairness Committee
Purpose:
· Provide a final mechanism for the resolution of student complaints concerning either academic unfairness or
discrimination. These procedures are for the purpose of resolving serious cases of unfairness or discrimination,
those which extend beyond academic judgment and honest differences of opinion and those for which normal
channels have proved ineffective.

Grade Appeal & Academic Grievance Hearing Panels: (2 positions)
Meetings: Assigned from pool on an as needed basis
Requirements: Student members (one) must have completed at least one quarter at CSUEB with a minimum of 8
units, have a GPA of at least 2.3 and be enrolled for 7 or more units during the quarter of service on the Hearing Panel.
The Presidential Appointee shall maintain a list of prospective student panelists who have been approved after
consultation with the President of Associated Students. The Fairness Committee or Associated Students will assign
student panelists from the list.
Purpose:
· Academic Hearing Panels are subsets of the Fairness Committee established to pass judgment on the allegations
made by the grievant whose complaint with the Fairness Committee is forwarded to a Hearing Panel for further
consideration.

Committee on Academic Planning and Review (CAPR): (2 positions)
Meetings: 1st & 3rd Thursdays; 2:00 PM – 3:50 PM
Purpose:
· Responsible for evaluating existing academic programs and reviewing and revising the Academic Master Plan of the
University
· Coordinates long range plans for academic development with campus planning of facilities development
· Makes recommendations concerning principles and procedures governing the development, improvement, and use
of the academic facilities of the University
Committee on Research (CR): (2 positions)
Meetings: 2nd & 4th Thursdays; 2:00 PM – 3:50 PM
Purpose:
· Includes the "Institutional Review Board" (an extension of the typical "Human Subjects Committee")
· Influences how faculty conducts research on an institutional level and how faculty involves students as researchers
or subjects
Faculty Diversity and Equity Committee (FDEC): (2 positions)
Meetings: 2nd & 4th Thursdays; 2:00 PM – 3:50 PM
Purpose:
· Oriented towards faculty issues and its main duties focus on policies and procedures for faculty diversity, including
hiring and retention
Associated Students, Inc. Committees
ASI Finance Committee (3-5 positions)
Meetings: At least twice a month during the academic year
Purpose:
· Clearing initial requests for funding from recognized clubs & organizations on campus
· Review an annual budget prepared by the staff
· Provide input to the Board of Directors on the expenditure and allocation of ASI's funds
· Review reports of the year-end fiscal audit process for the corporation
· Develops and recommends policies and procedures for the use of funds
ASI Internal Affairs Committee (2-3 positions)
Meetings: At least twice a month during the academic year
Purpose:
· Responsible for overseeing and disseminating information of all student activities presented and sponsored by the
corporation
· Organize all Ad-hoc committees as necessary
· Disseminates information to the Board on all activities, actions and student services
· Recommends research to expand current services and opportunities offered by ASI to the Executive Committee
· Assist the executive director with developing and maintaining policy and procedures for the organization
ASI External Affairs Committee (2-3 positions)
Meetings: At least twice a month during the academic year
Purpose:
· Tasked with facilitating relations between students, the university administration faculty, the campus community and
all other relevant entities, organizations or individuals on the local, state or national level
· Responsible for assisting the Executive Committee who appoints or pro- vides a list of eligible candidates to
University committees as requested with the assistance of Judicial Affairs
· Addresses issues concerning students with the University and Faculty
· Works closely with the CSUEB Foundation Board, the Academic Senate and the University Administration to advance
students’ issues
· Provides a line of communication between the organizations and participate in on-going planning and activities
· Recommends research to expand current services and opportunities offered by ASI to the Executive Committee
ASI Legislative Affairs Committee (4-8 positions)
Meetings: At least twice a month during the academic year
Purpose:
· Coordinate student advocacy at the local, state, and national level
· Analyze and track impacting legislation at the state and federal level
· Informs the CSUEB community concerning legislation, issues and policies affecting higher education
· Disseminates information from the California State Student Association (CSSA) to the CSUEB community
· Works with the CSSA and Alameda County Registrar of Voters to coordinate on campus voter registration drives and
polling booths for national, state, local and special elections
· Develop and direct a Lobby Corps sub-committee within the committee and maintain a membership of eight (8)
o Tasked with implementing and refining student advocacy proposals put forth by the Legislative Affairs
committee
o Meet with the University Director of Governmental Relations at least once a quarter
o Coordinate information events as appropriate on issues and concerns affecting students
ASI Programming Council (4 positions)
Meetings: At least twice a month during the academic year
Purpose:

Set vision for cultural, social, and recreational activities.

Poll diverse students from all areas of campus on the types of events and activities they would like to see ASI
support and or provide.

Report regularly to the Board of Directors on all events and activities held by ASI.

Work with staff and advisors to set the priority of the next fiscal year’s activity calendar.
ASI Environmental Affairs Committee (5 positions)
Meetings: At least twice a monthly during the academic year
Purpose:
· Tasked with working with the University to implement environmental sustainability policies and programs on campus
· Works with the Facilities Department to investigate energy usage and distribution on CSUEB campus
· Researches existing conservation programs and propose possible programs and alternative solutions
· Researches and coordinates the implementation of potential low impact options to increase energy efficiency on
campus
ASI Concord Campus Committee (4 positions)
Meetings: At least twice a monthly during the academic year
Purpose:
· Responsible for overseeing and disseminating all ASI related information to the Concord Campus
· Serve in an advisory capacity in budget and fiscal matters related to Concord funding to the Board of Directors
· Serve as ambassadors to all Concord campus Students
· Organize events to build relationship between Concord and Hayward Student Body
Elections Committee (5 positions available)
Meetings: Weekly during the elections process and begin planning meetings in the Winter Quarter
Purpose:
· Plan, oversee and carry out all elections of the Associated Students, Inc. in conformance with the corporation’s
Election Code, University policies, and the California Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation Law
· The Board of Directors shall approve the members of the Elections Committee during the Fall Quarter for Spring
Quarter elections
University Wide/External Committees
Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug (ATOD) Advisory Council (open)
Development of alcohol and other drug abuse policies and prevention programs. The advisory council consists of
approximately 25 members, including representation from the campus, students, staff, faculty and the community and is
divided into five subcommittees: Policy, Assessment, Education & Prevention, Community/Treatment and Funding. The
Council Participates in the following alcohol education/awareness activities but is not limited to: Fall Welcome,
Homecoming Week, Spring Break, “Soberest”-Alcohol Awareness Day, Alcohol Awareness Evening at the Residence Halls,
“Alcohol Jeopardy” at the Residence Halls, Resident Advisor (RA) alcohol training, Date Rape Programs.
College of Education & Allied Studies College Council Committee: (1 position)
The faculty of the college has established a College Council to work with the dean. It delegates to the College Council its
responsibilities to consult with, and to make policy recommendations to, the dean concerning: administrative policies and
procedures; college governance and college Bylaws; academic planning, curriculum development and evaluations;
organizational structures and functions; interdepartmental collaboration and coordination; standards for, maintenance of, a
high level of professional conduct; and college elections/nominations and review of administrative officers.
Community Policing Advisory Board (CPAB): (2 positions)
CPAB acts to improve the safety and awareness of the East Bay’s campuses and the surrounding communities.
Developed by CSUEB’s Department of Public Safety, the Board is comprised of CSUEB law enforcement, students, staff,
faculty and administration as well as residents of Cal State East Bay's surrounding communities. The Board acts as an
advisory body to CSUEB’s Chief of Police.
Concord Campus Advisory Committee (CCAC): (1 position)
The primary function of CCAC is to advise the Academic Senate on policy issues related to Cal State East Bay’s
Concord Campus. CCAC examines issues ranging from affairs of students, curriculum and instruction, research, faculty
affairs, technology, and/or resources on the Concord Campus.
Meetings: 4-6:30 once a month upon availability.
Strategic Enrollment Advising Workgroup:
Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC): (open)
The Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) is comprised of Students, Staff, and Faculty who are concerned about the
health and wellness of CSUEB Community members. SHAC advocates for the health needs of students and advises the
Director and University President on SHC programs, scope of services, and hours of operation. SHAC also proposes SHC
fee levels; conducts student needs assessments and satisfaction surveys, assists the SHC in presentations of health
awareness programs, and provides outreach to the campus community regarding health issues.
Student Technology Advisory Committee (STAC): (open)
An email list serve made up of students and University wide-IT Committee Chair meant to gather student input on a
variety of Technology issues to be brought directly to the entire University wide-IT Committee by the Chair and/or the
students on that committee.
What's Next?
Applications for appointment will be collected and processed by the ASI officer. Applications will be
reviewed and screened by the appropriate committee and/or officer depending on the position applied
for.
In the case of applicants for appointment to Internal and External committees, those found to be the best
qualified shall be interviewed on an as needed basis by the relevant committee or ASI officer. After
meeting with all qualified candidates, the relevant committee or ASI officer shall submit his or her
recommendation to the ASI Board of Directors (ASI BOD) for consideration. A representative of the
relevant committee shall handle all arguments for appointment before the ASI BOD. Those applicants
selected to serve shall be notified of their appointment by the relevant committee or ASI officer. For
some external committees ASI will provide the committee chair with a list of candidates to be appointed
by the chair of the committee.
All unsuccessful applicants will be notified by the relevant committee or ASI officer and their application
and interview materials are held for future consideration.
