Criteria B011 – Template for email about Personal Appliances

As part of working towards making King’s a world class university we are trying to reduce the University’s
impact on the environment. As a Sustainability Champion it is my job to try to inform you about ways in which
you can be sustainable in your daily life.
We are currently encouraging staff to refrain from having any personal appliances, such as heaters, printers or
fridges and ask if everyone could make used of the communal ones.
It is much more efficient to have a small number of shared energy-efficient appliances than for members of
staff to have their own personal appliances. It also reduces the need for electrical testing (which is costly) and
can reduce health and safety risks.
For example a personal heater that is used for 5 hours each day can cost up to £273.78 which is a huge
amount. If you are feeling cold in your office perhaps consider wearing an extra few layers or please do contact
the sustainability team and we can help to solve your problem.
If for any reason you feel that you need to keep your personal appliance please do contact either myself of a
member of the sustainability team and we can discuss potential alternatives.
