We are looking to recruit a proactive, organised and flexible Science Technician to support the
faculty and ensure our students continue to make excellent progress within Science. In addition to
working well as part of a team, candidates must possess a science or engineering degree, excellent
ICT skills, sound health & safety knowledge including COSHH. The ability to use own initiative and
work efficiently and effectively would be very helpful.

environment for students aged 14 to 19. Through a blend of academic rigour, project based learning
and industry partnership; Elstree UTC will grow tomorrow’s creative technologists. Alongside the
core subjects Elstree UTC offers a broad range of courses focusing on technical skills, trades, crafts
and technologies that support the entertainment, film, television, theatre, visual arts and digital
communications industries
The Science department is committed to providing an exciting and stimulating science curriculum for
every student at the college. Our aim is to develop our resources to allow students to learn through
practical experience using a variety of experimental techniques and approaches. The science
department has a staff of 3 qualified science teachers. We have three fully equipped laboratories
and a large prep room.

Duties and Responsibilities
1. To prepare resources/equipment for teaching, including making up chemicals.
2. To support learning activities where additional adult support would benefit the class.
3. To undertake where appropriate routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment, resources
and materials to ensure a safe and orderly working environment.
4. To clean the equipment/resources/work area after use including chemical/biological spillages
in accordance with COSHH.
5. To check equipment/resources for safety, reporting any faults/problems/damages.
6. To ensure laboratory equipment is moved and stored safely and securely as instructed in line
with Health and Safety regulations.
7. To be responsible for ensuring that chemicals and biological waste are disposed of safely, in
accordance with the safe practices of CLEAPSS.
8. Maintaining science laboratories and preparation rooms and their equipment, and services
in good order.
9. General duties in support of the teachers in the Science Department.

General laboratory cleaning (bench surfaces and fixed equipment).
Cleaning laboratory sinks
Organising and storing chemicals and equipment.
Obtaining materials by local purchase.
Disposing of waste materials.
Trialing practical activities.
Carrying out risk assessments for technician activities.
Providing technical support to experienced and trainee teachers including health & safety
guidance.
16. Keeping up to date with developments in practical science.
17. Keeping up to date with health & safety requirements.
18. To provide support for learning activities on occasions where demonstrations of technical
apparatus would benefit from additional adult support.
