Process Journal Guidelines
The purpose of this journal is to document the process of planning, implementing and reflecting on
your CAS project. This journal will be your primary method of showing how your project developed
from an idea to reality. As part of this process, you will be completing:
-
Guided journal entries regarding the problems and solutions you encountered during the
process
Documented evidence of the planning, execution and reflection stages
Timelines of activities
“To Do” Lists that are maintained and updated throughout the process
Each section will provide instructions on how to complete the various stages of the project. Your
project advisor will be checking your progress throughout the year and ensuring that you are planning
appropriately to complete the project prior to the end of the year.
4
Advisor Meetings
By the end of September, you will be assigned a project advisor from the ASM staff who will assist in
helping to make your project a reality. This person is volunteering his or her time to work with you. It
is your responsibility to schedule at least 4 meetings with them throughout the year, as they will be
monitoring your progress throughout the project. Your advisor is a great asset to assist you through
the process, so make sure you are communicating your project goals and objectives clearly to them.
Make sure that you bring your process journal with you to all meeting, as your advisor will be signing
off on your progress through the different phases.
5
CAS Project Requirements
-
Project needs to be self-initiated in which you lead the planning, implementation and reflection
phases
-
Project must incorporate 2 of the 3 CAS aspects:
o Creativity: arts and other experiences that involve creative thinking.
o Action: physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle, complementing academic
work elsewhere in the Diploma Programme.
o Service: an unpaid and voluntary exchange that has a learning benefit for the student.
-
Project must be a real, purposeful activity
-
Project must be a personal challenge, and not something that you do as a part of your normal
day-to-day routine
-
Project can be school-based or outside of your school community (any external projects must
still be supervised by a ASM staff member)
-
Upon completion, you must reflect on the 8 CAS Learning Outcomes
6
CAS Learning Outcomes
Your CAS project needs to identify and fulfill several of the CAS learning outcomes:
-
Increase your awareness of your strengths and areas for growth
Identify your various skills and abilities, and describe how the project has developed other
areas
-
Undertake new challenges
A new challenge may be an unfamiliar activity, or an extension to an existing one
-
Plan and initiate activities
Planning and initiation will often be in collaboration with others. It can be shown in
activities that are part of larger projects, for example, ongoing school activities in the local
community, as well as in small student-led activities.
-
Work collaboratively with others
Collaboration can be shown in many different ways and through various activities
-
Show perseverance and commitment in your activities
At a minimum, this implies accepting the responsibility for dealing with problems that arise
in the course of activities.
-
Engage with issues of global importance
Students may be involved in international projects but there are many global issues that can
be acted upon locally or nationally (for example, environmental concerns, caring for the
elderly or the Habitat for Humanity trip).
-
Consider the ethical implications of your actions
Ethical decisions arise in almost any CAS activity. Evidence of thinking about ethical issues
can be shown in various ways.
-
Develop new skills
As with new challenges, new skills may be shown in activities that the student has not
previously undertaken, or in increased expertise in an established area.
