Unit 1: Place Value
Number of Instructional Days: 20
Unit Overview
The concepts within this unit appear first because it lays the crucial foundation for the rest of the
year. Think of a building with a poor foundation that any minor earthquake will cause it to crumble.
Students will study the place value system to one million to understand the relationship between
numbers, compare and round whole numbers, as well as learn critical skills and mathematical
practices to set up students for success. Mastery of place value is necessary to perform multi-digit
arithmetic in Units 2, 3, 4 and eventually with decimals in Unit 5 and 9.
Success is reached through formative assessments, true attention to the mathematical practices,
and students’ ability to explain concepts, and errors/mistakes.
Concepts developed in Unit 1 include:
● digit’s position affect value
● rounding
● reading and writing number to the millions
● mastery/proficiency of place value system
● compare whole numbers
Emphasized Mathematical Practices
MP 7 - Look for and make use of structure.
 I understand how place value is organized and how its position affects its value.
MP 6 Attend to precision.
 I can be precise when solving problems and clear when communicating my ideas.
Priority Standards
Number and Operations in Base Ten 4.NBT.
4.NBT.3. Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place. Use place value
understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic.

Supporting Standards
Enduring Understandings and Essential Questions for Content Standards
Enduring Understandings are those concepts we want students to remember ten years from now. They are the important concepts underlying the content. The
goal is that after instruction, students should be able to independently answer the Essential Question with a grade-appropriate version of the Enduring
Understanding. Activities should be designed to allow the student to discover the Enduring Understanding
THE BASE TEN NUMERATION SYSTEM —
The base ten numeration system is a scheme for recording
numbers using digits 0-9, groups of ten, and place value.
●
In a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it would represent in the place immediately to the right. This
is similar to bundling tens and hundreds in primary grades.
●
Understanding place value can lead to number sense and efficient strategies for computation.
Essential Questions are questions based on the Enduring Understandings that we use to guide or drive instruction and assessment.
• How does our place value system work?
• Why is the number to the left ten times greater than the number to the right?
•Why learn to compare?
•Why learn to round?
• How does a digit's position affect its value?
