DIXIE CONTOS ATHENA SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established to support non-traditional female students pursuing Business education beyond high
school. Open to women returning to school, single mothers, and other non-traditional female students studying Business.
In 1985, the Chamber of Commerce began recognizing achievements of women in business with the Athena Award and
Dixie Contos Hovermale was a winner in 1996. In her honor, the other past recipients have chosen this scholarship to
benefit women who exemplify Dixie’s beliefs and traits. . Two of Dixie’s key traits were her genuine passion for the
community and her ability to inspire others.
Dixie’s family owned and operated Pay Less Super Markets through three generations. Dixie acquired her family’s passion
for the city of Anderson and Madison County and put forth an inspiring effort during her lifetime to make Anderson a
better place. One of her many projects was the creation of the Little 500 Festival Dixie touched people in many different
ways, none more important than through her courageous battle against illness that might have robbed her of her health,
but never her optimism or her dignity.
The Dixie Contos Athena Scholarship is open to applicants who:
 Have been a Madison County resident for 12 months prior to the date of application.
 Are non-traditional female students
 Are studying business
Preference will be given to students who:
 Are returning to school, single mothers, and other non-traditional students
Required Attachments:
 Essay: In no more than 250 words, complete an essay on how you have used or could use some of the traits Dixie
Contos Hovermale possessed to be a successful, inspiring leader in your community.
Please submit one original application to the office of the Madison County Community Foundation office (33 W. 10th St,
Anderson, IN 46016) by 3pm, Friday, October 30.
Winner(s) will be notified by November 5th, 2015 and will be required to attend the awards ceremony to be held
Thursday, November 12, at the Anderson Country Club. (Time TBA).
