Chalk Pastel Warm-Up (quiz grade)
You will SHARE one BRAND NEW pack of chalk pastels with a neighbor. Write your
names on a piece of tape and put it on your pastel box. Only use your pastels and keep
them all together so you always have a complete set.
*Chalk pastels are great for blending together and layering on top of each other to
create new colors.
1. Shade this sphere using warm colors (yellow-orange-red). Just like the example.
Make sure you include highlights, mid tones, and shadows.
2. Shade this sphere using cool colors (blue – green – purple).
3. Practice hatching, cross hatching, and stippling in the spaces below.
4. Create a variety of textures found in nature (ex: water, grass, trees, flower petal…)
Thumbnail Sketches. Show me sketches and chalk pastel warm up for your Quiz
grade. Choose one for your final composition.
Landscape Planning Guide ::
1. ___Things to consider about your landscape:
• Place/Location • dessert, mountains, lake, valley, beach…
• Weather • winter, spring, summer, fall, rainy, snow, cloudy, sunshine…
• Time of day • dawn, mid-day, dusk, night…
• Objects • NO MAN MADE OBJECTS!
trees, bushes, water, lily pads, grass, cactus, sand dunes, flowers, animals…
1. ___Draw 2 thumbnail sketches of your landscape displaying your knowledge of
atmospheric perspective (overlapping, size, placement, color, foreground, middle
ground, background). Show me for these sketches along with your chalk pastel warm up
for a QUIZ grade. Choose one layout to use as your final composition.
2. ___With a neutral colored pastel, lightly draw the main layout of your landscape on
the final black paper (9x24).
3. ___Think backwards! Leave the black paper bare where you have the darkest areas!
Build up the mid tones, then you will finish your work with distinct marks. We will create
similar areas of broken color in the style of the Impressionists. Hatch and Crosshatch.
Stipple in the style of Pointillism. Do this in various directions. Contour your strokes.
This will all create a sense of motion. The lightest tones are the last ones that you will
put on the paper. They are the finishing touches and the icing on the cake!
