Terms and conditions of entrance examinations for
doctoral studies in English in the 2015-2016
academic year in the field of Composition and
Composition Theory
For the academic year 2015/2016, the doctoral study programme will be offered for 1 place in
full-time or combined studies.
Candidates will be assessed based on their artistic and compositional results hitherto, and based on
their submitted project proposal for the creative and research work.
Projects should be focused preferentially on one of the following creative and research areas:
1. Composition and Composition Theory
Educational and practical requirements
- a completed university education at the Master’s level in the field of composition;
- compelling results in artistic work hitherto;
- compositional practice, knowledge of composition work, and an excellent overview of
contemporary music;
- creative music-theoretical thinking ability and commensurate formulative ability.

2. Music and technology – research on interdisciplinary aspects of contemporary acoustic
arts
Educational and practical requirements
- a completed university education at the Master’s level in composition or a related field (e.g.
electroacoustic music, intermedia art and technology);
- a creative portfolio demonstrating extensive compositional practice, deep knowledge of
compositional work, and an excellent overview of the relationships between music and technologies
in the relevant interdisciplinary crossovers.

Candidates may be selected to realise projects only in the first area, only in the second area, or in
both areas.
At the entrance examination, the candidate shall present representative samples of his or her
compositional work hitherto as an annex to the application for admission. He or she should also
submit sheet music (or corresponding graphic notation) and recordings of his or her works of up to
20 minutes in length. Furthermore, the candidate shall submit a sample of his or her musictheoretical works hitherto, and present them to the examination committee in the form of a short
lecture of up to 10 minutes in length.
It is expected in particular that the project presented by the candidate will:
- contain a clear proposal for the candidate’s compositional and research activities during the
programme;
- formulate a proposal for the manner in which the candidate will actively contribute to the daily
functioning of the Department of Composition.
The main tasks of a candidate admitted to the doctoral programme will be in particular:
- intensive work on his or her own artistic project and theoretical research, which is the subject of
post-graduate studies;
- pedagogical assignments according to the Department’s current needs;
- performing the role of an assistant in the Department’s concert and project operations (1st area),
or in the Department’s laboratory (2nd area), or intersections of both activities as needed;
- to actively initiate new grant projects and to apply for funding and organisational resources for
their realisation.
To the successful candidate, the Department of Composition offers all of its facilities, a standard
doctoral stipend in the event of full-time studies, and the possibility of additional funding
depending on the doctoral student’s own grant activity.
Programme staffing according to the student’s individual academic plan will be provided by the
Department of Composition and the Department of Theory at HAMU.

ADMISSIONS PROCEEDING – doctoral study programme 2015/2016
Based on a motion by the of the relevant Subject Councils, the Dean of the Music and Dance Faculty of the
Academy of Performing Arts in Prague announces an admissions proceeding for the doctoral study programme in
the Art of Music.

Field of COMPOSITION AND COMPOSITION THEORY
Creative and research areas of the dissertation:
a) Composition and Theory of Composition following on from the Department’s previous
research and creative projects;
b) Music and technology – research on interdisciplinary aspects of contemporary acoustic
arts.
Number of places and mode of study: 1 x full-time or combined
