Toileting
Policy and Procedure
Purpose of Policy
The purpose of this policy is to ensure that nappy changing, toileting and
management of the toilet area at Charleston Nursery provide children with a
safe, clean environment that promotes privacy, dignity and independence.
Who is Responsible?
It is the responsibility of every member of staff to ensure that toileting
incidents are dealt with in a timely, clean and private manner.
It is the responsibility of the manager to ensure that all members of staff have
knowledge of the correct procedures and provide or seek out staff training to
ensure the correct guidelines are in place.
It is the responsibility of the member of staff who has managed a toileting
incident to maintain records and leave the changing area clean, tidy and ready
for the next person.
It is the responsibility of the member of staff allocated to cleaning to ensure
that routine checks of the toilets are carried out and the area is clean and
ready for use. It is the responsibility of this person to record these checks.
Facilities
Charleston Nursery has its own toilet facilities which are separated from the
main nursery environment. It contains three toilets and two sinks which are
appropriate for children’s age and heights. There is a wall mounted changing
unit which currently meets safety standards from BSI (8). The area is fitted
with a self closing door which currently will remain open for children’s safety.
The room is easily cleaned with wipeable surfaces, is well lit and contains
appropriate ventilation. The area has a child friendly bin for disposal of paper
towels only and an adult bin for use for disposal of gloves, aprons, disposable
nappies and other waste. Paper towels for hand drying and wall mounted soap
dispensers are there for adult and child use.
Nappy Changing
Every child requiring their nappy changed during a nursery session should have
their own Personal Toileting Plan which has been agreed with the parent prior to
them starting nursery. This outlines the parental wishes and child’s routine
during nappy changing. These should be stored in the toileting folder and a
copy placed into their personal file.
When changing a child’s nappy all staff will try to make it as fun as possible,
whilst retaining good hygiene and respect for the child. To ensure the levels of
hygiene in the toileting room the following procedure will be carried out:

Use wall mounted or floor changing mat where child is deemed too big for
fitted changing station

Fresh gloves and apron must be worn for every nappy change.

Prepare changing area by taking out relevant things that are required.

The changing unit/mat should be covered with a fresh paper sheet.

Staff must use the child’s wipes that have been provided by the
parent/carer.

When changing a nappy all staff should ensure that they clean from front
to back to avoid any cross contamination or infection.

Change the child’s nappy and place soiled disposable nappy within a nappy
sac and tie securely. Double bag.

Dispose of bagged nappy using designated waste bin.

Gloves should be removed and second pair of fresh gloves are worn
before a clean nappy is put on the child.

Ensure child is comfortable and encourage child to wash hands.

Spray and wipe the changing area after each nappy change with an antibacterial solution and disposable cloth.

Tidy area and put all used items away ready for next person

Dispose of gloves and apron in designated waste bin

Wash your hands

During nappy changing times the toilet facilities will be placed on amber for
children to acknowledge that a child is being changed and some degree of
privacy is required.
Potty Use
Children who are currently making use of a potty should have their own potty
which has been provided from home. This should be clearly labelled with the
child’s name. Children who currently are being potty trained will require their
own Personal Toileting Plan which will identify parental wishes.
When supporting a child and ensuring cleanliness in the use of a potty the
following procedures should be followed:

Fresh gloves and apron must be worn.

Potties should be used in toilet cubicles. Children should be encouraged
to independently recognise and find their own potty and take it in to a
cubicle.

Children should use toilet paper provided in cubicle.

After the child has made use of the potty it should be sluiced in the
toilet, cleaned using disinfectant spray and a disposable cloth. It should
be dried thoroughly using paper towels. When storing do not stack
potties.

Children should wash their hands.

Dispose of gloves and apron in designated waste bin

Tidy area and put all used items away ready for next person

Wash your hands.
Toileting
Children who are no longer in nappies are actively encouraged to use the toilets
independently. It is part of their nursery routine that they learn how to use
the facilities in a responsible way and take care of their own hygiene. Nursery
staff will promote positive behaviour in the toilets and teach children how to
wash their hands correctly through different activities across the nursery.
This will help them to use the toilets in a safe and clean manner.
Accidents
We understand that children are still very young at this age and accidents do
happen. Every child should come to nursery with a spare change of clothes
available and kept on their peg ready for such instances. In the case of an
accident the following procedures should be followed:

Use wall mounted or floor changing mat depending on the child’s size and
development

Fresh gloves and apron must be worn for every change.

Prepare changing area by taking out relevant things that are required i.e
wipes/fresh clothes. Spare clothes are available within draws in the
toilets.

The changing unit/mat should be covered with a fresh paper sheet if
using this area.

Staff must use the child’s wipes that have been provided by the
parent/carer to ensure the wet or soiled areas are cleaned.

Remove any wet or soiled clothes and place within sealed bags provided.
Double bag. A label with the child’s name should be placed on the bag.
This bag should be kept on the changed clothes hook within the toilet
facilities ready for parents to take home at the end of a session.

Gloves should be removed and hands washed and a second pair of fresh
gloves are worn before a clean clothing is put on the child.

Ensure child is comfortable and encourage child to wash hands.

Spray and wipe the changing area after each change with an antibacterial solution and disposable cloth.

Tidy area and put all used items away ready for next person

Dispose of gloves and apron in designated waste bin

Wash your hands.
During changing times the toilet facilities will be placed on amber for children
to acknowledge that a child is being changed and some degree of privacy is
required.
Recording
A record of nappy changing and accident changing must be recorded on the
Record of Changing/Cleaning Children sheet. When children have had an
accident and have had to be changed parents should be informed verbally at the
end of a session.
Cleanliness
An audit of toilet use should be carried out termly to ensure toilet checking and
cleaning procedures are appropriate for the number of children accessing them
in a session. This should be established using the Toilet Audit Form.
Toilets will be clean and ready for use for each nursery session. All sites of
hand contact i.e handles/taps/door knobs will be cleaned/disinfected.
Disposable cleaning cloths will be available for minor clean up jobs. A nursery
mop is stored in the school’s cleaning room available for larger accidents. This
should be kept clean by disinfecting, wringing out thoroughly and positioned with
mop facing upwards ready for use. Waste bins should be lined with appropriate
disposable bags.
Sinks found in the nursery toilets will only be used for hand washing purposes.
The toilet cleanliness will be checked by a designated member of staff
throughout the day and will be recorded on the Toilet Cleanliness Record.
Toilets will be deep cleaned by school cleaners daily.
In cases where toilets are found soiled or unfit for purpose a janitor and SMT
should be contacted immediately.
Storage
All cleaning disinfectants, substances and materials will be stored out of reach
of children in the locked cabinet at all times. Products should be clearly
labelled as to what they are used for.
Items required for changing children i.e. clothes or additional wipes/cotton
wool. will be stored in sealed drawers in the nursery toilets. Staff disposable
aprons and gloves will be stored in a separate drawer and labelled. These should
be kept in original packaging where possible with the expiry date and serial
number available. Recall of these products will be routinely checked by the
nursery manager.
Information about recall alerts can be found through the Medical and Health
Regulations Agency (MHRA) at www.mhra.gov.uk
How the Policy is Implemented
This policy and procedures will be shared with staff and parents. It will be
routinely updated and reviewed as outlined in the nursery’s policy review
overview.
The nursery manager will look to ensure that all relevant training in line with the
policy is sought out for nursery staff. This will ensure they are able to meet
policy and procedure requirements outlined.
Responsibilities for cleaning and recording highlighted will be on a rota basis.
