Researching the Carpenter lines is rendered difficult by the large
number of families bearing that name. The 1784 census of Virginia
lists six heads of households named William Carpenter.
In this paper we will present four brothers, sons of Nathaniel and
Tamar (Coles) Carpenter, who moved from New York state and settled in
present day Alleghany County VA in 1746.

Joseph Coles Carpenter, a son of Nathaniel and Tamar (Coles)
Carpenter, was born about 1693 and died about 1780. He moved from New
York state to present Alleghany County VA (then Botetourt County) in
1746 and began a settlement of Jackson's River near present day
Covington, VA. He was accompanied by his brothers, Solomon, Zopher
and Nicholas. After building a cabin and planting crops, he went to
New York and brought his family to Alleghany County in the fall of
1746.
Joseph received a grant of 782 acres of land on Jackson's River in
Augusta County VA June 1, 1750. On August 17, 1762, Joseph conveyed
230 acres on the Jackson River to John Mann, who was married to
Joseph's daughter Frances. On May 20, 1765, Joseph conveyed 232 acres
of land to his son Joseph Carpenter Jr. On May 20, 1763, Joseph
conveyed 160 acres of land to his son Solomon Carpenter.
Joseph is believed to have been the Joseph Carpenter who served in
Captain John Dickenson's Rangers in the French and Indian War.
Joseph's first wife is unidentified. She is believed to have died
in Augusta County about 1750. Joseph married Judith Scott about 1751.
On November 29, 1751, Joseph was recorded as legal guardian of
Judith Scotts children.

The parentage of Jeremiah Carpenter has long been disputed and is
still uncertain today. Jim Comstock's "West Virginia Encyclopedia"
lists him as a son of Sethison Carpenter.
One branch of the Carpenter line maintains through traditional
history that Jeremiah was a son of William Carpenter, who was
probably a son of Joseph Carpenter, an original settler in present day
Alleghany County VA. This traditional history is supported by Gay
Arret's "Historical Sketches of Alleghany County VA" on page 11. In
describing a 1764 Indian raid, Arret states, "The party which came to
Jackson River traveled down Dunlap's Creek and crossed Jackson River
above Fort Young in the nigh and went on down to William Carpenter's
(Low Moor) where there was a stockade for under the care of a Mr.
Brown." "The Indians met Carpenter near his home and killed him and
made prisoners of Jeremiah Carpenter, a son of the slain man, and two
sons of Brown and one woman. The Indians despoiled the house and
taking some horses made a rapid retreat."
Although there are at least four Jeremiah Carpenters reported to
have been alive in VA in 1750-1800, only one is ever known to have
been captured by the Indians and held for a lengthy time. All sources
agree that the Jeremiah who lived in present day Braxton County WV
served a lengthy captivity with the Indians.
Morton's "A Centennial History of Alleghany County VA" lists
Jeremiah as a son of Solomon Carpenter, an original settler in the
bounds of that county.
Jeremiah Carpenter, a son of Solomon and Sudna (Hughes) Carpenter,
was born in present day Alleghany County VA in 1755 and died in
Braxton County VA about 1832. In 1764, his uncle was killed by
marauding Indians and Jeremiah was captured and carried to the Indian
village "Old Town", across the Ohio River, opposite the mouth of the
Great Kanawha River, where he was adopted and lived until he was
eighteen years old. At that time he was exchanged (an action to which
he was opposed).
Jeremiah served in Colonel William Fleming's Botetourt County
regiment at the battle of Point Pleasant, VA during Lord Dunmore's
war.
Jeremiah married his cousin Elizabeth Mann March 8, 1785.
Elizabeth was a daughter of Moses and Fanny Mann.
Jeremiah Carpenter, William Scott and Richard Mays patented 900
acres of land in present day Braxton County WV June 18, 1782 by virtue
of Treasury Warrant No.12359. On April 20, 1785m they patented
another 1,000 acres in the same area.
About 1780, Jeremiah traveled with his wife, and brother,
Benjamin, to the Elk river where Centralia, Braxton County, is now.
He made a clearing in the virgin forest and built his home, about
one-fourth of a mile above Dry Run. His brother Benjamin soon went
back to VA, returning with a wife. Ben built his cabin at the mouth
of Holly River, four miles below Jeremiah's home.
Many small bands of Indians roamed through the wilderness, so it
wasn't long until the new settlement was discovered. One of the
Indians slipped in, killed Benjamin's wife, and then hid in the cabin.
Benjamin, his mother and a niece were on the south side of the river,
where he was clearing a field and burning log heaps. Not knowing what
had happened, Benjamin started to the cabin to prepare a meal. An
Indian fired at him from the hill and missed. Benjamin ran to the
cabin for his rifle. As he raised his hand to reach for his rifle,
which hung over the door, he was shot under the arm and killed by the
Indian that had scalped his wife. When his mother saw what had
happened, she hid the girl in a hollow stump and covered it with a
rock. She then ran up the river to get Jeremiah.
That night the Carpenters left their home and made their way up
the river. They waded in the water to hide their trail, making their
way up Laurel, and then up Camp Run, where they climbed the hill and
hid under a rock, where they remained for some time. The cave is
still known as "Saulie's Rock", because it was here that Jeremiah's
son, Solomon Carpenter, was born.
CALHOUN COUNTY LINES & LINKS for December 1983 states that
Jeremiah sold "a small tract of land on Elk River at the mouth of
Holly river" to Peter Coger in 1817. This same source also lists
Jeremiah's wife as Elizabeth Mann.

Jesse Carpenter was a son of William Carpenter. He served as an
Indian spy during the Revolution, under Major William Lowther and in
Colonel Joseph Crockett's Regiment. This regiment was called Illinois
as it was under George Rogers Clark which went to Ohio country to
subdue the Indians at Vincennes. These soldiers protected the
Continental Army from having to fight on two fronts, Indians in the
West and British in the East. Hulda Hogshed reports that he was also
a veteran of the War of 1812.
The name of his first wife is unknown. He married Margaret
Cottrell in Braxton County VA (WV) in 1814. Margaret, a daughter of
Thomas Sr. and Mary "Polly" (O'Brien) Cottrell. , was born in 1800 and
died in Clay County WV November 24, 1880. Jesse died in Braxton
County VA (WV) between 1843 and 1850.

Mary Carpenter was a daughter of Jeremiah and Elizabeth (Mann)
Carpenter. She married Peter Coger Jr. in Nicholas County Va (WV) in
1820. Peter Jr., a son of Peter and Mary (McElwain) Coger, was born
in Franklin county, VA February 4, 1797 and died in Braxton County, WV
October 10, 1866. Peter and Mary lived on Elk River on the tract of
land that Peter bought from Jeremiah Carpenter. Peter Jr. drowned in
Elk River.

John Carpenter, a son of Jeremiah and Elizabeth (Mann) Carpenter,
was probably born about 1795 and was killed in Roane County VA (WV)
about 1835. He married Judith "Polly" Miller.
One account alleges that Judith was the daughter of Samuel Miller
and Rebecca Carpenter and the niece of John. This is doubtful, since
Rebecca was born in 1793 and John and Judith's son Elijah was born in
1828. Judith was most probably a sister of Samuel Miller.
After John died, Judith married Jesse Tanner.

Jesse Carpenter, son of Solomon and Mary Elizabeth (Knight)
Carpenter, was born about 1825, probably at Centralia, Braxton County,
VA and died in Clay County Va (WV) November 7, 1861. He married
Elizabeth ------. Elizabeth was born in VA about 1830.
Jesse Carpenter has long been believed been killed in Gilmer
County VA (WV) during the Civil War by a group of Confederate
guerrillas. James A. Rogers and Jesse were killed at the same time
and they were listed as neighbors in the 1860 Clay County VA (WV)
census.
Clayburn Pierson reported the events of the night of November 7,
1861 as follows:
"The victims were James Rogers, a peaceful and respected citizen,
and Solomon Carpenter, his Neighbor. The murderers were a band of low
characters claiming to be rebel soldiers led by Perry Connolly of bush
whacking fame. The murderers came to the homes of these innocent men
in the dead hours of the night; their wives were absent from home
waiting on a sick woman.
These fiends dragged their victims out of their beds and away from
their children, took them a short distance, bound them back to back,
and riddled their bodies with bullets."
