Membership
Girls and boys from Years 3 + may participate in the Instrumental Music Program. Students may commence a String instrument in Year 3, while
Woodwind, Brass and Percussion instruments are available from Year 5. Lessons are conducted in groups as determined by the instructor.
Marching Band membership is open to children from years 4 + who play fife, flute or percussion. Our school choir takes children from grades 2 +
Music Association
The Music Group is a sub-committee of the P & C Association and meets every month to make decisions concerning the general operation of
the program. All parents are invited to attend these meetings to contribute ideas and express their concerns regarding any aspect of the
program.
The objectives of the Nundah State School Music Sub-Committee are:
To enable as many children as possible to participate in enjoyable music making

To participate in community activities

To enter into inter-school competition
Together with staff of the Nundah State School this committee works to ensure continuation of instrumental and vocal music and marching as
well as attending to the day to day logistics of the Performance Music Program.
Termination of Lessons.
There are two methods:

You may remove your child at your discretion naturally, by forwarding a note to this effect to the Music Teacher through the Principal.

The Principal, in conjunction with the Instrumental Music Teacher, may exclude a child from tuition if they do not make steady progress
either through lack of practice, attendance or aptitude or they do not attend Performing Group rehearsals and functions.

Attendance:
Students must attend all lessons and rehearsals. Punctuality is vital and tardiness will be noted. Please be aware that tuition is free of charge
and your child is enrolled for a minimum of one year. We ask the student and a parent to sign here to indicate their commitment to the program
requirements.
Parental Commitment.
 Give consideration to providing your child with a suitable instrument after 12 months of instruction.
 Show an interest in the music study of your child.
 Find a quiet place for him/her to practise without interruption.
 Arrange a regular time for practice.
 Help him/her with his/her practice as much as possible by following instructions in their music tutorial books.
 Never make fun of the strange sounds he/she may make.
 Help him/her maintain a practice record.
 Give him/her a safe place to keep the instrument.
 Keep the instrument in good repair with strings or reeds, etc.
 Teach him/her to be on time for lessons and rehearsals.
 Encourage him/her to play for others whenever possible.
Student Commitment.
Every student must agree to:
Practise regularly - minimum of 15 minutes every day.

Become a member of the school concert band or orchestra or other groups as designated by the instructor.

Take part as required in all concerts and camps.

Attend lessons, rehearsals and other classes regularly as required and remain in the instrumental music program for the full year. Failure
to honour this commitment will result in an interview with the Principal who reserves the right to review the Student’s participation in
School activities.
Performance Groups.
The main performance groups at Nundah State School are:

Concert Band

Marching Band

String Ensembles

Choirs





Rehearsal times for all groups are posted on the noticeboard in the main stairwell and classrooms with the instrumental music lesson
times.
Attendance at all rehearsals is compulsory, and a roll will be kept. Absences must be explained by a note from parents. Three absences
from rehearsal without a valid reason will result in a period of exclusion.
Children are expected to keep uniforms clean and tidy when representing the school.
Children in the Marching band are to obey instructions from the Majorette in charge of the band at that time. The Drum Majorette has
certain disciplinary powers.
At functions and competitions instruments are not to be played unless instructed to do so.

Operational Guidelines

Once a child is selected and accepts selection, he or she must attend lessons and rehearsals as per the timetables.

Lesson timetables are displayed in the main stairwell area.

Children are expected to bring the appropriate instruments and materials required by the instructors to all lessons.

Home practice each day is vitally important.

All students having lessons in the Instrumental Music Program are expected to be part of a Performance Group as determined by the
instructor. Rehearsals for these groups are a necessary part of the process of learning to play an instrument and are therefore compulsory.

From time to time, children will be expected to participate in School and public performances, day or night, by one or more of the various
performance groups, and attend any extra rehearsals involved.

Behaviour and dress must be of a high standard consistent with the expectations of the Nundah State School. At all rehearsals, functions
and competitions, members must abide by the school rules. Offenders will be disciplined.

School instruments are available for a trial period of one year for most instruments. Larger, more expensive instruments may be borrowed
for longer at the discretion of the principal. If a student displays ability and interest, their progress will be enhanced by having their own
instrument. In these cases it is recommended that parents purchase an instrument for the student.

It is suggested that privately owned instruments be marked and insured. They are valuable possessions and the school cannot be held
responsible for lost or damaged instruments.
Maintenance contribution
In order to cover the ever increasing cost of music and repairs to instruments resulting from general wear and tear, a maintenance contribution
is payable by all students involved in the Instrumental Music Program.
(Please see your letter for details of current pricing)
Please Note: This maintenance contribution does not cover the cost of consumables such as:
String Instruments - Rosin, Strings and Shoulder Rests
Woodwind Instruments - Reeds and Cork Grease
Brass - Slide and Valve Oil
Percussion - Drum Sticks and Drum Practice Pads
Any damage caused by misuse, neglect or abuse is not covered by the maintenance contribution.
Any repairs as a result of such damage must be paid for by the person signing the Loan Agreement
