Inaugural MO SW-PBS Awards given to Maple Park Middle School,
Excelsior Springs School District
Maple Park Middle School in North Kansas City and the Excelsior Springs School District are
recipients of the inaugural Dr. Mary Richter Missouri Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support (MO
SW-PBS) School and District of Distinction Awards during the 2014 Missouri SW-PBS Summer
Training Institute held June 11-13.
SW-PBS is a globally recognized, research-based behavior intervention system that has now
been implemented in more than 700 Missouri schools. MO SW-PBS is supported through a
partnership among the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE),
The University of Missouri Center for SW-PBS at the MU College of Education, and nine regional
professional development centers in Missouri.
The Dr. Mary Richter Awards were created to honor Richter, the founding director of MO SWPBS, who put the systems in place that allowed the MO SW-PBS initiative to flourish across the
state. The award presentations were made by Richter’s daughters, Amanda and Laura Frick.
“The work of Missouri SW-PBS is widely recognized not only throughout the U.S. but also
worldwide, largely as a result of Dr. Richter’s work,” said Tim Lewis, director of the University of
Missouri Center for SW-PBS and co-director of the National Office of Special Education
Programs Center for PBIS. “We congratulate all the school and district nominees who exemplified
Dr. Richter’s spirit, love, and dedication to creating safer and more effective schools by
supporting the academic and social successes of all students.”
