AGRICULTURAL GENETICS (CRD: 4,0; HOURS: 48,00)
Aim of this Course is to provide the foundation of knowledge of vegetable genetics. The two main
areas of study will focus on cultivated plants’ genetics and on related genetic biotechnologies.
Acquisition of competences concerning the analysis of genetic data and useful features for
management of agricultural resources also based on modern molecular technologies.
Review of classic genetics. Genetics of population. Quantitative genetics. Structure of genetic
material: genes. Genetic and genomic mutations. Reproduction methods of cultivated plants. The
origin of agriculture. Genetics applied to agriculture: the Green Revolution. Principles of genetic
improvement and relevant examples. Inheritability of characters and selection. Utilization of
heterogenesis and constitution of hybrid seeds. Physical and chemical mutagenesis applied to genetic
improvement. Plants genetics improvement and vegetative propagation. Principles of molecular
biology. Molecular markers and their utilization. Isolation of genes: chromosome walking and gene
tagging. Exogenous DNA transfer vectors. Utilization of genetic engineering in agriculture: genetically
modified organisms (GMOs).

3 - Requirements
The position requires both:
 university training in a relevant discipline;
 solid experience evidenced by publications.
4 - Obligations
The lecturer appointed by the University of Makeni has the following obligations:

Hold at the Faculty of Agriculture, at Makeni, during the semester foreseen, the lectures/practical
activities indicated in the Degree Syllabus for the course entrusted to him/her; the possibility that the
teachings are carried out in part or totally through computerized systems is not excluded;

Establish appropriate forms of contact with the students during the lecture period as well as for the
entire duration of the lectureship;

Hold examination sessions.
5 - Duration of the lectureship
The duration of the lectureship is one academic year, starting from the official assignment of the UniMAK
Academic Body, with the possibility of renewal. To each course four credits are assigned that are equivalent
to 48 hours of teaching activity distributed across an overall period of approximately 15 days.
6 - Selection procedure

The Scientific Committee, on the basis of the CVs gathered by the Director of Human Resources of the
University of Makeni, selects the lecturer informing the administrative offices of UniMAK about the
outcome in order for them to provide for the formalization of the assignment.
