We would like permission to talk to your child’s peers in his or her
classroom about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as well as other
special needs. This educational presentation will include general
information about ASD as well as addressing specific strengths and
weaknesses that your child might be displaying in the classroom.
“Peer to Peer Mediation” is an evidence based practice that has been
found to have great impact on outcomes for students with and Autism
Spectrum Disorder as well as other disabilities. In essence, typically
developing peers learn about autism and how it affects their peer in
their classroom so they can best support their friend with autism to build
his or her social and communication skills. Allowing peer to peer
programming staff to teach students about the unique characteristics of
autism is the first step to building effective peer supports.
This informal conversation is very helpful for classmates who are
already aware of differences but don’t fully understand them. It is also
beneficial to your student as well in that he/she will feel accepted and
supported by his peers.
Thank-you for allowing this learning opportunity to occur.
Sincerely,
Rachel Byma
