ETE WEEKLY BULLETIN
This newsletter is meant to give you the latest information about your ETE colloquium, academics on campus,
professional development opportunities, and other news and upcoming events of interest. At a minimum, you are
REQUIRED to read the ETE Colloquium Information every week – this area will often contain information that
could affect your course grade. The rest of the bulletin is optional (but hopefully helpful) reading material.
If you have any questions about the content of the bulletin, please look at BOTH the Canvas ETE colloquium
website AND the ETE organization website, THEN contact your instructor if you cannot find the answer you need.

Guided Study Sessions in the CCC for Scholars - READ THIS - it will make a difference in
your GPA!
ETE Freshmen - you’re new to a different kind of academic life, which brings demands that are
sometimes unfamiliar and expectations that are more complicated than “read this chapter and learn this
fact.” Your first midterm exams are on the horizon, if not already here. “Is that going to be on the test?” is
probably not the best question to ask right now, but it’s the one you’re going to hear the
most. (Sophomores, you may think you know this - but it's good to refresh your memory)
We at Scholars want to make sure you know about useful programs on campus as you learn to be a
university student. One of those resources is called Guided Study Sessions, or GSS, and provides
additional support for students in about 15 courses (see link below) most of which have a relatively high
rate of failing & low grades at midterm. Many of you are currently enrolled in at least one of those classes.
GSS is for all students, not just those who feel completely lost during lecture. GSS is led by senior
peers, who’ve earned an A in the course, have studied ways to teach other students, and who are guided
themselves by people who know how to teach well. They can empathize, in other words. The
leader/coach has training in teaching group study and ties each session to what’s happening in the
general lecture. Now is the time to visit a GSS session, even if only to know it’s a familiar resource you
might revisit later in the semester. Better to go in to that first exam prepared…
The classes with some of the highest failure rates on campus are MATH140, MATH141, CHEM 131 &
CHEM 135 - even if you think you are doing OK in these or other classes, you can benefit from these
sessions! There IS a correlation between taking advantage of this sort of thing and an increase in
GPA. These study sessions are designed to help both successful and struggling students. As a member
of Scholars, you have access to many of these sessions in the CCC - very convenient - wouldn't you
say?
The CCC schedule for these 4 courses is below, but here’s the link to the full list across
campus: http://www.counseling.umd.edu/LAS/html/gss.html

Charity Softball Tournament, Leadership Positions Available—Applications Due October 4th
These positions will take dedication and a fair amount of work, but they are very rewarding & you will learn some
great event organizing skills. Please do NOT apply if you are not willing to commit the time needed. Contact Ben
Parks (see below) if you have any questions that you need answered to decide whether or not to make this
commitment. We have not yet had an ETE Softball coordinator...will you be the first?
One of our proudest traditions in Scholars is the annual Charity Softball Tournament. It started in 1998 as a
sophomore practicum project and has grown into an annual staple of our calendar. Since then, we have been able to
donate over $20,000 to charities locally and around the world who deal with the health and welfare of children. To
learn more, here is a video that a student completed for a class project several years ago. We are looking for talented
Scholars students (freshman and sophomore) to serve as assistant coordinator, assistant fundraising coordinator, and
assistant public relations coordinator for the 17th Annual "Step Up to Bat for Kids" Charity Softball Tournament.
Freshmen, you may be thinking, “I haven’t seen this event….how can I lead it?” We value your involvement, fresh set
of eyes and enthusiasm! You will serve on a team, and eventually become full coordinators next year.
