Paper 1
Text 1 is a newspaper article that was published in the The Telegraph, a
newspaper in the UK. The purpose of this article is to inform the audience about
insurance of people who have lost their spouse. The speaker wants to inform the
audience that it would be smart to have insurance in the chance that a spouse
dies. The context, audience, and formal and stylistic features all contribute to the
purpose of the text.
The context of this article is relatively recent. This article was published in
2012 by The Telegraph. This article was written by Kara Gammell. If someone
read this article now, the situations would be different though. The article says
that women's life insurance rates had increase by 20pc. This rate has probably
grown which would give the article more ethos. Ethos is persuading the audience
by appealing to ethics and giving the text more credibility. By having this statistic
in the article, this gives the article ethos. Other than that statistic, the article
would probably still be relevant today.
The audience of Text1 are the people who are married. This article is
centered around the idea that some people are left without insurance after their
spouse dies. In the first sentence of the article, the speaker says that "many
women of the house are the breadwinner." A breadwinner is someone who
makes the income for themselves or for a family. This article would be targeting
the non-breadwinners of the relationship, because they could not have
insurance. It would be for the person in the relationship who has insurance
because of their spouse's profession, and would be left without insurance if that
spouse were to pass away. The audience is crucial to the purpose of this article
because it helps inform them of the importance of having insurance.
The formal features of this article are very important to the purpose. The
layout of the article is what a newspaper article should look like. It has a headline
and a byline. The byline of this article is very specific and gives good context to
the article. It gives the name of the person who wrote the article, the time and
date of when it was published, and which newspaper it was published for. This
gives the audience good context of the article before they begin to read it. There
are also some parts of the article that are in bolded type. The speaker obviously
wanted those points to be emphasized. One of the sentences that is bolded is "a
grim reality," this emphasizes on the fact that purpose of this essay isn't to make
the audience feel bad about the people who have lost their spouses, but to help
them prepare if the same were to happen to them. The other part in the article
that is bolded is, "female life insurance rates have increased by as much as
20pc," this also helps the purpose by telling the audience that they should also
prepare and get life insurance incase of the event in which their spouse were to
pass away. The stylistic features of this article also have an impact on the
purpose of this article. The speaker of this article uses logos in order to persuade
the audience. Logos is the use of logic and reason to persuade the audience.
The speaker doesn't focus on the sadness of when someone loses their spouse,
but what they should do if that were to happen. The speaker repeats "grim
reality," this shows that the speaker understands that it is sad when a spouse
dies but it happens, and it is important for the spouse to be able to live with life
insurance after their spouse dies.
The context, audience, formal and stylistic features all play an important role
in the purpose of the text. This article was written to inform the audience that life
insurance is very important to have, even if you are not the one in the
relationship who has a job.
