the citadel that was constructed later on (17th / 18th century). It takes approximately
NATURE & MOUNTAINS For those who love nature ... the hinterland of
the coastal region which is located between two mountain ranges, offers
widespread plains and breathtaking nature. The mountain range in the
south, the Catalan Pyrenees, rises majestically to the tops of the Canigou
(2785 m) and the Carlit (2921 m). An absolute must is "Le petit train
jaune", the train connection between Villefranche / Vernet-les-Bains and
Latour-de-Carrol. If you take this train and travel 63 kilometers, you're
assured of great views of plateaus / bridges and viaducts in the Pyrenees.
In this area hiking, climbing, biking and - in winter - even skiing is
possible. The Gorges de la Fou, the narrowest gorge of the world in the
neighbourhood of Arles-sur-Tech, and further to the north, the Gorges de
Galamus, are for both adults and children magnificent and exciting

CULINARY & NIGHTLIFE There are plenty of restaurants / bistros.
Depending on the need and taste, a choice can be made from Catalan,
French or international restaurants or - usually simpler - "fast food style"
eating places. Typical Catalan dishes are stews with fish and lots of
vegetables, hams, meatballs with cinnamon (boles de picolat), salads of
roasted vegetables (escalivada), Catalan paella and lots of sweet-sour and
sweet-salty combinations. Paella dishes, as well as pizzas, can be collected
on almost every street corner. Whatever choice for dinner you make, keep
in mind that most kitchens are open from 19pm and not earlier. As from
many other regions in France, some famous local wines come from this
region too. The best known are Banyuls (near Banyuls, Collioure, Cerbère
and Port-Vendres), Rivesaltes and Chateau de Valmy (Argelès-sur-Mer).
The castle of Valmy is definitely worth a visit. Nightlife is certainly
possible in the vicinity of Saint Cyprien. For the youth from about 16 years
old, the most fun can be found in the neighboring villages Canet-Plage and
Argelès. There is a funfair at the port of Saint Cyprien throughout the
summer period. In this area also the majority of music festivals, artist
shows and fairs take place. And those who want to try their luck ... there
is a casino in Saint Cyprien (casino de Saint Cyprien).
BEAUTY & WELLNESS For those who want a relaxing day, there is a
range of possibilities, from beauty salons, thalassotherapy (e.g. in Hotel
les Flamants Roses in Canet-Plage and in Thalacap in Banyuls), hammams
(e.g. in adjacent hotel Mas d'huston in Saint Cyprien) within a radius of 20
kilometers to thermal baths in for example Amélie-les-Bains and Vernetles-Bains tens of kilometers further away. Besides the baths, these
villages offer ample opportunity to explore the beauty of the surroundings.
