JOB DESCRIPTION – FULL TIME TEACHER - PRIMARY
Accountability

A full time teacher shall carry the professional and administrative responsibilities
under the direction of the Head of Section and/or Principal, together with any
particular duties that the Head or Principal may from time to time reasonably
assign to him/her.
Key Relationships

A full time teacher should maintain effective, constructive relationships with all
staff.

A full time teacher will liaise together with the Principal, Heads of Section,
Director of Studies and other teachers to promote curriculum development of
courses of study, teaching materials, teaching programmes, methods of teaching
and assessment within the guidelines laid down by the National Curriculum in
the UK.
Key Tasks

Full responsibility for a class of children

A full time teacher will also be a subject coordinator in the Primary Section and
will need to work alongside a counterpart subject coordinator in the Secondary
Section to ensure a smooth transition from KS2 to KS3 and to share ideas.
Main Responsibilities

Full responsibility for a class of children, including:
o Planning and preparing programmes and teaching materials
o Assessing individual educational needs and teaching at a variety of levels to
meet these.
o Monitoring, assessing and recording the progress of all pupils assigned to
him/her, providing written and verbal reports on development, progress and
achievement.
o Working towards the pertinent SAT’s examinations and conducting the
assessments should it be appropriate.
o Promoting the children’s general physical, social and emotional welfare. This
includes overall responsibility for every child during official school working
hours and for a reasonable period afterwards.
o

Communicating with, consulting and advising parents and participating in
meetings arranged for any of the purposes described above.
Shared responsibility for the educational, social and administrative organisation
of the school. This includes:
o Working together with the Principal, Heads of Section, Director of Studies and
other teachers to promote curriculum development of courses of study,
teaching materials, teaching programmes, methods of teaching and
assessment within the guidelines laid down by the National Curriculum in the
UK.
o Reviewing from time to time methods of teaching used and programmes of
Work. Participating with all in-service training arrangements.
o Sharing in the responsibility for the purchase, care and distribution of
equipment and materials, especially in the areas of his/her expertise.
o Maintaining good order and discipline among the pupils and safeguard their
health and safety both when they are authorised to be on the school premises
and when they are engaged in authorised school activities elsewhere.
o Reasonable participation in general supervision duties; this includes
overseeing and supporting parents undertaking lunchtime supervision, but in
normal circumstances teachers will be entitled to a lunch break.
o Reasonable teaching/supervision of children from other classes in their own
teacher’s absence when a supply teacher cannot be made available.
o Sharing responsibility for the promotion of good relations between The British
School parents, other schools and the local and expatriate communities at
large.
o Participating in regular staff and Key Stage meetings at the school relating to
curriculum, administration and organisation of the school including pastoral
arrangements.
o Taking responsibility for the Teacher’s Aide/s placed in his/her
classroom/work area.
Daily working hours
Teachers employed full time will work at least 1265 hours per year and additional
hours as needed for marking pupils’ work; writing pupils’ Reports, preparation of
lessons, teaching materials and teaching programmes.
Annual working days
Teachers employed full time will undertake 185 contact days per year of teaching. There
will also be five INSET days and 5 preparation days per year. These working days will
be spread over four terms in each year.
Extra-curricular activities and After School Clubs
There is a clear expectation that teachers will act as coordinator for a club, on a rota
basis per term, either alone or with parents/specialists who have volunteered to take
responsibility for such activities. Each teacher is expected to be involved in at least two
clubs per year.
