VULVAR BIOPSY INSTRUCTIONS
You are having a biopsy of the skin of the outer genital region called the vulva.
Preparation:
There is no preparation necessary. It can be performed anytime during the menstrual cycle. You will
not need to have anyone drive you for the appointment.
No pre-biopsy medications are necessary. However you may wish to take Tylenol, Advil, or Motrin
about 30 minutes before the procedure to reduce discomfort.
Procedure (5 minutes):
The biopsy area is cleansed with an antiseptic solution to avoid infection. A local anaesthetic is
injected into the biopsy site. This is done with a very fine needle and is uncomfortable (sharp and
burning) for less than one minute.
The skin tissue sample is then removed.
Pressure may be applied to the biopsy site for a few minutes. Sometimes a medication is applied to
the area to stop bleeding. Sometimes it may be necessary to place a small stitch.
The local anaesthetic is very long lasting. There is minimal post-procedure discomfort.
Post-Biopsy Care:
It will take a few days for the biopsy site to heal. During this time, the biopsy area may sting and be
tender.
Ice packs may be used for comfort or swelling. Oral pain relievers such as Tylenol or Advil may be
used.
It is normal for the area of the biopsy to be reddened or even white or black in colour for a few days
until healing is complete. You may also have some slight bleeding from the biopsy site.
Keep the biopsy site as clean as possible. Both showers and (short) baths are allowed. Dry the area
thoroughly by gentle dabbing / patting (no rubbing).
You can apply Neosporin or Bacitracin ointment to promote healing.
You are able to return to work the same day of the biopsy procedure. You are able to drive.



You can resume vigorous exercise such as running, cycling, horse riding, etc after three
or four days.
You can resume sexual intercourse after three or four days.
You can start swimming again after three or four days.
Biopsy Risks:



The biopsy may leave a small scar on the skin.
There may be some delayed bleeding from the biopsy site.
o If this happens, apply pressure to the skin for 15 minutes while lying down. If the
bleeding is excessive or continuous, notify the office (or attend a local Walk-in Clinic or
Emergency Department).
There is a risk of infection.
o If this happens, the site of the biopsy will feel more uncomfortable and hot as the days
progress. The biopsy site may also start to ooze. You may also develop a fever.
o If these symptoms occur, notify the office (or attend a local Walk-in Clinic or Emergency
Department).
Follow-up:
The biopsy test results usually take 10 – 12 days.
Please schedule a follow-up office visit to discuss the test results in about two weeks.
Call the Office: 250 592-5633
If you have any questions or any unusual or unexpected symptoms.
