Beware Energy Saving Snake Oil
A few members have recently been approached about purchasing devices that purport to save
energy. Proceed with caution! You might be throwing your money away if you install one of these
without doing your homework.
We are finding that these devices won’t result in energy savings anywhere near what is being
claimed. And often they deliver no savings at all! These devices have been marketed under a variety
of names over the years. Typically they are just power factor correction for individual
machines/motors. If you already have power factor correction at your main distribution board, then the
benefits of investing in another system inside your plant will not make financial sense.
Tips:
 It’s a cliché, but if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is
 Look for vague claims on percentages they say they can save
 Watch for sales pitches that use highly technical terms. Usually they are trying to deliberately
confuse you.
 If you decide to proceed because they guarantee the savings, be very careful about the way they
monitor and prove these savings
 If you’re not sure, feel free to contact me and I’ll let you know if it is a product we have come
across before.

Special show at K 2013: “Plastics move the world“ - Hall 6
Plastics move the world – particularly in connection with the major challenges faced by our modern
society. Incredibly versatile, lightweight, safe, durable, economic and impressively energy-efficient –
with their multitude of positive properties, polymers are indispensable in most areas of our daily lives.
And the material’s success story is far from over, as it moves into new areas of application all the
time. Plastics move our lives in more ways than one, both in the figurative and the literal sense. About
3,100 exhibitors will document this enormous potential at the K 2013, the largest international trade
show for plastics and rubber, which starts on 16 October and ends on 23 October in
Düsseldorf/Germany. Selected exhibits will also be presented at a special show with the title “Plastics
move the world”. They illustrate the many improvements already attributed to plastic products today
and their potential contribution to future challenges, e.g. by protecting global resources in the future.
