Infant/Toddler Scale Grant Program
The Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (PA-AAP) joins the Pennsylvania
Department of Health to provide a grant opportunity for selected practices to receive a Tanita, BD_815U
Infant/Toddler Scale.* This Program is designed to assist in the ongoing efforts to increase breastfeeding
throughout the Commonwealth.
Utilizing a scale in a practice can be an important tool in supporting breastfeeding mothers and infants,
especially when results are taken in the context of the patient’s history, examination of the mother and infant,
and first hand observation of breastfeeding.
Consider the following:
 Accurate infant weights can reassure mothers to alleviate concerns that their breastfeeding infants
are not gaining enough weight or that they are not producing enough breast milk for adequate
weight gain;

Pre and post breastfeeding weights assess how much milk the baby consumes to determine the
need for additional breastfeeding support;

Pre and post breastfeeding weights can help determine how much additional breast milk needs to be
fed to preterm babies or babies with compromised feeding abilities until they are strong enough to
take in enough breast milk on their own.

For a preterm baby a weight check two times a week can be helpful when transitioning to full
breastfeeding.
Practices interested in applying to receive one of the thirty scales available should complete this form
and return it to the PA-AAP by Monday, December 10, 2012. Applicants will be notified by January 31,
2013 if they were selected to receive the scale or not.

with a breastfeeding initiation rate below the state average initiation rate of 70%: Allegheny, Armstrong,
