Ride and Stride Saturday September 12th 2015
I am the local coordinator for Ride and Stride and I wondered whether this activity/ fund
raising would be of interest to any of your pupils or staff?
On Ride and Stride day sponsored individuals and groups walk or cycle (or horse ride and
other more exotic means of transportation e.g. scooter) between churches and we arrange
that the majority of churches of all Christian denominations throughout Oxfordshire are
open. Half the proceeds from sponsorship goes to the Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust
and half to the participant’s own church. The scheme has been run since 1984 and has
given great fun, exercise, interest and achievement to people from the ages – in our county
we have had participants from 9 months to over 100. It is also the largest source of
income to Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust - £136,954.95 was raised in 2014. It is part
of a national event overseen by The National Churches Trust. One of last year’s cyclists was
the Bishop of Dorchester – and he says "I am much looking forward to cycling round some of
the churches and chapels of Abingdon area this September. Details will be on the OHCT and
Diocesan websites. Do come and join my party, but I hope that all around the county young or
old will be on their bikes and enjoying a great day out."
We would be delighted if you or any of your pupils or colleagues would like to join one of
groups of riders or arrange their own itinerary. We can of course provide sponsor forms
and a list of all the churches that will be open and (hopefully) manned to sign these. If we
may, we will send you a poster advertising the day when they are printed.
I also wondered whether I could address the school or selected classes for a few minutes
to explain the event to your pupils? In the meantime, if you would like further information
