Hello to all of the Umlahs!
Here's the historical info that I have -- some of which came, indirectly, from Iris Shea. I am the
granddaughter of William Borden Umlah...
I'll apologize up front for the length! :)
1 John Umlach
---------------------------------------Birth:
ca 1726, Scotland
Death:
Jul 8, 18211
Burial:
Redmond Cemetery, Seabright, St. Margaret's Bay
John Umlach, progenitor of the Umlahs and Hemlows of Nova Scotia, native of Scotland, was a
soldier who fought in the French and Indian wars in the United States and Canada (according to
his son's petition in 1808). The petition, made by John Jr. for Luke's Island in St. Margaret's Bay,
places John Umlach, St. in Philadelphia in 1758. At the time of their arrival in Chester, NS, the
family consisted of a wife, Isabella, two sons and one daughter. Seven more children were born
in Chester and their baptisms are recorded in St. John's Anglican Church in Lunenburg, St.
Stephen's Anglican Church in Chester and the Dutch Reformed Church in Lunenburg.
John Umlach was b. ca. 1726 in Scotland; d. 11 Jul 1821 (St. Paul's Anglican, Halifax), buried at
Seabright, St. Margaret's Bay, NS in a cemetery which was on his own land and which is now
referred to as the Redmond cemetery. There is no gravestone evident but in an estate deed in
1821 the cemetery is mentioned, as is the fact that John and his wife are buried there. His wife,
Isabella, was b. ca. 1736; d. 21 May 1813 at age 77 (NS Royal Gazette). In his notes, Canon
Harris stated that Isabella was the granddaughter of Jannet McDonald who played a role in the
escape of Bonnie Prince Charlie. This, however, was not correct since Isabella Umlach was a
contemporary of Jannet McDonald. Isabella's gravestone, made of red sandstone, was said to
have been brought from Scotland. It can be seen in the same cemetery, with the spelling of the
surname "Hamlow". John and Isabella had ten children.
The names Umlach, Umloch and Imlach can be found as early as 1649, in Scotland, and
continues throughout the next two centuries in the parish registers of Alves, Elgin, Forres,
Kinloss and Lhanbryde, in Morayshire, Scotland. A baptism record of a "John Umlach" in the
parish of Elgin on August 2, 1726 may be that of the original settler in Nova Scotia of that name,
although there is also a possibility that the name was spelled Imlach before he emigrated.
John Umlach and his wife, Isabella, came to Scotch Cove in East Chester, Nova Scotia in 1762,
having received a land grant for his service with the British Army. He moved to the eastern side
of St. Margaret's Bay (Seabright) in 1780.

1.6a William Umlach*
---------------------------------------Birth:
Mar 14, 1770
Death:
1839, Goodwood
William Umlach was born 14 mar 1770, baptised at St. Stephen's Anglican Church in Chester,
NS.
He was the son of John and Isabella Umlach of Scotland. At the age of ten years, he moved with
his parents to the east side of St. Margaret's Bay, in the area known as Seabright, where, in 1997,
there is still an "Umlah Road". While his two older brothers, John and James, followed the sea in
their younger years. William stayed on the land, helping to run the family farm until he married
and established his own farm in Goodwood, Halifax County, NS. The spelling of the name
changed frequently, but it was not until after William's death in 1839 that "Umlah" became the
accepted spelling for future generations of this line of the family.
Another spelling, "Hemlow", was taken by some two lines of his descendants.
William's brother, James, who had settled in St. Mary's River, Guysborough County, had already
experienced a change in the spelling of his name, and that entire line continues to be known
as"Hemlow".
William m. (1) 16 Sep 1797 Mary Ann Wagner whose father, Thomas Wagner, from Germany,
received a land grant, bordering the western side of Long Lake near Goodwood. Mary Anne was
bapt. at St. Paul's Halifax, 23 July 1776. Her mother, Barbara Wilt, had been born in Lunenburg.
Mary Anne died 18 Jan 1822 at the age of 42 following the birth of her fourteenth child. Her
fourteen children inherited a portion of the Long Lake grant that her father had received in 1783.
Mary Anne's brother, John Wagner, who had married William Umlach's sister Mary, had no
children and left his portion of the Long Lake grant, in addition to the land he had purchased, to
his great nephew, John Umlah, whose heirs remained on the land until 1954 when it was
expropriated by the NS Power Commission. John Umlah and his wife, Ellen (Drysdale) Umlah,
named one of their sons "John Wagner".
William m. (2) 26 Mar 1824, Mary Ann Schwartz, widow of William Schwartz. Two more
daughters were born but there is no record of their survival beyond birth. Mary Ann died 4 May
1827 at age 42 (St. Paul's).
William m. (3) 22 Jun 1829, Mary Ann McGrath, widow of John McGrath of St. Margaret's Bay,
d/o Joseph and Mary Ann Peters. Mary Ann McGrath was the mother of eleven children, ten of
whom were living at the time of her marriage to William Umlach. She died 10 Jun 1857 in
Goodwood at the age of 78. Three of her children married three of William Umlach's children.
