 Description: Join us for a book study aimed at supporting literacy in the mathclassroom. When a
child can articulate understanding, they havereinforced their own learning and demonstrated
understanding to their teacher. This workshop is designed to assist math instruction by helping
children make sense of mathematics by gathering, organizing, and clarifying their thoughts. This
book study will help participants learn: The benefits of writing to support students learning and
help teachers assess what students understand. Journal writing, solving mathematical problems,
explaining and justifying mathematical ideas. Connections to addressing the Common Core
Mathematical Practices as well as the CCSS Literacy and Writing Standards. The study and sharing
of students’ math writing samples.
