Weeks 8-10, Art 2 Intermediate
Still Life in an Artist's Style
Week 8
Bilateral Symmetry: Part of Me is due first thing.
Informal balance still life in oil pastel, colored pencil, chalk, or charcoal.
1. Still life discussion: what makes an interesting still life? Find still life artworks in the room and
discuss style (realistic, abstract, non-representational) and ‘painterliness’ or 'hard-edged'.
2. Peruse issues of Art News magazine and find an article about a still life artist whose style you
admire. Document in your sketchbook:
a. name of the magazine
b. date
c. issue number (look on the spine of the magazine)
d. article title
e. article author
f. page number
g. artist it is about (if not listed in the title of the article)
4. List all the elements & principles and write about this artist’s style that is obvious for all the
elements and principles visible. Use your art vocabulary! See the Elements and Principles of Art
tab on Zoe's webpage.
5. Plan to create a drawing in the style of your chosen artist. You need to bring in objects that ‘go
together’ for a pleasing INFORMALLY BALANCED composition. You may use objects in the
artroom, your home, and then you may purchase others or ask your art teacher if she has anything
you can use. Your still life must either be one or two intricately detailed objects or three or more notso-detailed objects. Artistic vision credit will be given for more than four objects well drawn, intricate
details, excellent use of space, experimentation, and best adherence to your artist’s style. You will
also create a 3D papier mache version of a still life, so choose accordingly.
6. Finish the documentation of your artist’s style and decide how to incorporate it into
your still life.
7. Write a plan for your still life that details how you will use your chosen artist's style in your works.
8. Share this with a project buddy who can give you advice on making your artwork the best it can be.
At the end of the project, your buddy and you will present your artworks to the class and talk about
how you incorporated your chosen artists’ styles.
9. You must have your plan approved by Wednesday of week 8. You will have a sub Thursday
and Friday. When your documentation is approved, you may begin your project.
10.
Work in Progress Buddy Critique with Constructive Criticism.
11.
Still life drawing will be graded on contour lines, craftsmanship excellence, adherence to artist’s
style, use of space, and challenge of the piece. Due: Duesday of week 9.
Weeks 9-10
Papier mache
1. View http://www.slideshare.net/ksumatarted/papier-mache-sculpture for an introduction to
Papier mache.
2. Demonstration of papier mache' and plaster mesh. All sculpture must be stable before these can be
mache’d.
3. Put newspaper or other large scrap paper down to minimalize mess.
4. Work together with your tablemates: share the buckets, papers, and mesh.
5. All large parts sticking out must be stabilized with a second layer of cardboard. Ears and other small
parts do not need stabilization.
6. Create a papier mache' version of all the items in your still life. You may want to view sculpture artists
to plan your sculpture or stay with your current artist's style. Please also consider what base you will put
them on: the base may be papier mache', paper,
Cardboard, a plate, wood, or some other sturdy object. Use acrylic paint, etc. on your final forms.
7. Review your plan for the still life artworks. Is it still accurate? Do you need to update it for
accuracy and style? Be sure you edit the plan for accuracy, spelling, capitalization, punctuation,
and sentence construction.
