CALLING APPLICATIONS FOR UNIVERSITY RESEARCH GRANTS 2016
University of Colombo announces the availability of funds for research, as part of its plans to inculcate research culture amongst staff/students and to upscale the high quality / impact research, which in turn would improve the institutional grading in the global university ranking system. The objectives of providing these funds are to increase the number of doctoral-level degrees (PhDs) produced by the institute, increase the number of scientific publications made in indexed journals and enhance the impact of research on issues that are relevant to national development hence the applicants are requested to make maximum utilization of the grants that are available with the University of Colombo.
1. Collaborative research grant proposals
Competitive research grants (with a mandatory training component) will be awarded in varying disciplines, including: o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o
Agro technology
Basic Sciences
Biotechnology
Computer Science & Information Technology
Energy
Engineering Sciences & Architecture
Environmental Sciences
Food Sciences
Geology & Earth Sciences
Health Sciences
Hydrology
Library & Information Science
Nanotechnology
Natural Resources & Biodiversity
Oceanography & Marine Sciences
Science Education
Social Sciences
Science & Technology Policy Studies
Eligible individuals:
Any Senior or Mid-career-level academic who has the knowledge and skills to carry out the proposed studies and who is willing to undertake the supervision of a research trainee(s) who would need to register for a research degree with the University of Colombo and successfully complete a doctoral-level research degree (Ph.D) within a maximum period of 5 years.
Budget and Duration:
Applicants may request up to SL Rs. 1,000,000.00 as annual cost for a period of performance of no more than 3 years.

2. Postgraduate Research Grants – Ph.D. (Junior-level academics -probationary lecturers)
Funds could be requested for research studies that would lead to a doctoral-level research degree (Ph.D.).
Eligible individuals:
Academics, Research Officers and Scientific Assistants (in the permanent cadre) who should register for a research degree with the University of Colombo with plans for successful completion of a doctoral-level research degree (Ph.D) within a maximum period of 5 years.
Budget and Duration:
Applicants may request up to SL Rs. 500,000.00 as annual cost for a period of performance of no more than 3 years.
3. Research Related Infrastructure Development Grants
Proposals which would improve the research output of the university with a benefit to the largest number of researchers and which contribute to the national development would be considered for funding.
4. Small Research Grants
Eligible individuals:
Staff members who hold tenured positions in the university and who are eligible for the research allowance under Establishment circular No 5/2014 (i) and 5/2014 (ii) dated 28.05.2014 and
30.05.2014 respectively.
Budget and Duration:
Applicants may request from SL Rs. 100,000.00 - 500,000.00 for a period performance of 3 months to 1year
