Teen Leaders Camp
Get excited to experience living in the great outdoors! Arriving prepared and well packed will help you
to have an exceptional week. Take the time to read through the program description and think about
what you will be experiencing during this camp.
• Packing Your Gear: Do not over pack. Stay close to the suggested packing list! Keep in mind that you
will be carrying your gear at check-in.
• Duffle Bag: A large size duffle bag, backpack, or trunk will be enough to store your gear for the week.
This will serve as your main storage for the entire week. Remember to bring a laundry bag to store your
dirty or wet clothes.
• Weather: Summer in Rhode Island can range from a cool rainy 65°F day to sunny, hot and humid with
temperatures near 100°F. The average summer high temperature in RI is 80°F, and the average low is
58°F. When packing anticipate cool and wet conditions. For this reason rain gear is required. Cotton is
great in ideal weather conditions, but cotton-free clothing is best for use outdoors because it doesn’t
absorb moisture and dries quickly. Cotton alternatives include nylon, wool, polyester, and polypropylene
and go under brand names such as Smartwool, Polartec, and Underarmor. Of course, come prepared for
sunny weather too with sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat with a brim. Don't forget two well-sealed
water bottles or a camel pack, as it will be essential to drink plenty of liquids.
• Raingear: Preparing for the possibility of rain is important for having a fun week. A quality rain suit
(top and bottom) is important for staying dry if it rains. Good raingear can be found in the camping
department of discount stores for $20-$40. Avoid flimsy raingear that could rip easily. The material,
whether coated nylon, PVC (rubber), or other synthetic fabric, should be waterproof. Water repellent
fabrics will not keep you dry in heavy rain. Windbreakers are typically made of water repellent fabric
and are not suitable.
• Footwear: Sneakers will be adequate for everyday use including any hiking. Basic hiking boots are also
fine. If you have foot or ankle weakness, choose a shoe with more arch or ankle support. Whatever you
choose, it is essential that your footwear fits properly. Wool or Smartwool socks with nylon liner socks
are helpful for keeping your feet comfortable when wet and for preventing blisters when hiking. An old
pair of sneakers to get wet, keen-type closed sandals, crocks, or water shoes are appropriate. For foot
safety, flip-flops, river sandals, or other open-toed shoes are not allowed at any time on the trip except
in the shower.
• Sleeping Bag: A medium lightweight sleeping bag (three seasons) is recommended. If you want a fitted
sheet, mattresses are twin-size, some regular length some are extra-long. You will be staying in a fourseason cabin with bathrooms and showers inside.
• Keep an open mind and get ready to try new things. Expect that your belongings will get dirty--new or
fancy items are not necessary. Leave your technology including watches behind. Come ready to adapt to
a different schedule and different activities. Bringing a small notebook, or some loose paper, for journal
and letter writing is an excellent idea. It will be great to look back at your journal after the trip. Do not
bring: cell phone, Ipod, MP3 player, electronic games, watch, candy, gum, food, tobacco, alcohol, illegal
drugs, aerosol spray, razor blades, weapons, toy weapons, pocketknife.
