THE WAYFARERS HIKE IN YORKSHIRE, UK, AS NATIONAL PARK
MARKS 60 YEARS
NEWPORT—RI---May 16, 2014 ----YORKSHIRE is truly a place to breathe in the extraordinary
natural beauty of the British countryside and rub shoulders with thousands of years of history.
This year The Wayfarers’ Yorkshire Walk coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Yorkshire Dales
National Park.
Windswept and wild or tranquil and pastoral, stone-built villages sit amid traditional farming
landscapes of field barns, drystone walls and flower-rich pasture meadows.
Yellowstone in the United States was the world’s first National Park, created in 1870 when the
government saw the need to protect wilderness areas from exploitation and make them available for
everyone to enjoy.
It took the British a while to catch up and the Dales National Park was designated in 1954 in
recognition of its breathtaking natural beauty, the diversity of its wildlife habitats, its rich cultural
heritage and its fantastic opportunities for outdoor recreation.
Covering some 680 square miles, the Yorkshire Dales National Park is a living, working environment
and is home to 20,000 people. It contains 903 miles of footpaths, 384 miles of bridleways and 5,400
miles of drystone walls.
Walk highlights will take The Wayfarers’ guests on unforgettable hikes from ancient forests to ruined
castles and bustling market towns via cascading waterfalls and roads built by Roman invaders.
 Visit the magnificent Castle Bolton where Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned
 Follow the Pennine Way to see England’s longest single drop waterfall
 Visit charming unspoiled villages and haunted ruins
 Sup a pint of ale in TV vet James Herriot’s favorite watering hole
