2. Objective(s): Determining the fish species composition, structure and specifying
characteristics of fish distribution as well as the current status of fishing in Dam rivers, Tam
Ky city, Quang Nam province to propose solution for the sustainable development of fish
resources.
3. Creativeness and innovativeness: The species composition and distribution of fish fauna
in this area have not been significantly studied before.
4. Research results: Through the process of collecting samples and identifying the
composition of fishes in Dam rivers, Tam Ky city, Quang Nam province, 91 fish species
belonging to 66 genus, 32 families and 13 orders were identified. There were 4 endangered
species marked in Vietnam Red Data Book (2007) at level VU – Vulnerable, 11 species have
high economic values and 9 exotic fish species were recorded.
According to the species composition and structure, Perciformes was the most dominant in
families with 14 families (occupied 43,75% of total families). The Cypriniformes was the most
diverse in genus (with 24 genera, occupied with 36,36% of total general). In species, the
Cypriniformes and the Perciformes consist 34 species in each (occupying 37,36% of total of
species).
The analysis results on fish species composition in Dam rivers, Tam Ky city, Quang Nam
province showed that there were 3 ecological groups following salinity including fresh water
fish’s group (91 fish species belonging to, occupying 65,93%), brackish fish’s group (25 fish
species belonging to, occupying 27,47%), salt water fish’s group (5 fish species belonging to,
occupying 6,59%).
The status of fishing in streams and irrigation in Dam rivers, Tam Ky city, Quang Nam
province was happening very excessively. The using destruction tools for fishing was the main
reason for the decline in fish resources in this area.

6. Effectiveness, method of transferring research results and implication:
The results of this thesis research gave significantly important contribution in the fields of
supplementing the valuable scientific datas on species composition and distribution of fishes in
Dam rivers, Tam Ky city, Quang Nam province as well as supposing solutions for the
sustainable development of fish resources.
