Through Amanda, daughter of ?????? My grandfather Joseph Lemuel Hall 3-6-1874, he was in WWII
assume that's where he was born...the WV Jackson Co website showed her was from Armstrong PA.
Amanda’s husband John William Hall (father John Page sic Poage Hall) I assume was from the area of
Buckhannon WV (dk if that's Wirt or Upshur Co.)

The WV pioneer site stated he was Weslyan Methodist. Possibly born on Atlantic Ocean!!!

Being it's the WV Pioneer Site showing this info, I assume it's accurate and from source documents they
have access to.
I just pulled this up online from wv pioneer site and saw that it shows both Joseph & wife Elizabeth from
Massachusetts.
Amanda is listed with John William next she was born PA.

1860....In 1860 Joseph is in Virginia, present day West Virginia
Reedy is a town in Roane County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 198 at the
2000 census.
West Virginia is one of two American states formed during the American Civil War (1861–
1865), along with Nevada, and is the only state to form by seceding from a Confederate state. It
was originally part of the British Virginia Colony (1607–1776) and the western part of the state
of Virginia (1776–1863), whose population became sharply divided over the issue of secession
from the Union and in the separation from Virginia, formalized by admittance to the Union as a
new state in 1863. West Virginia was one of the Civil War border states.
Next above Butcher's was Squire R.R. Chancey, who lived in the little old frame house across
the creek from the narrows. Chancey was a Justice of the Peace in 1872. He bore a prominent
part in the reconstruction period and was popular even with the opposition.
He had three grown children. Jacob Tichnell Chancey was perhaps twenty five years old, and
was a local preacher in the Methodist church. He taught a summer school at Pleasant Grove in
1874, and the fall after he married Miss Alcinda Graham. He lived several years in a house he
built on the left side of the creek, below Calvary Chancey's. Pleasant Grove is in Middle Fork of

Old Josey Graham, a Pennsylvanian, lived almost in the woods, far up the run. His children at
home were: Alcinda, Dave and Joe. He owned all the head of the run, his land reaching across
the next stream and joining Clarissa Riddle. He had a house across on that stream not far from
where Lowell now lives.
His son in law, Dulin, had cleared a field on the ridge at the head of the run. It is now grown over
with saplings and bushes, and the Dulin pine, long a landmark for all the country side, is now

Summary.......there are discrepancies between Joseph and his wife Elizabeth between the 1850
census with the other census records......birth year and birth place.......all the children appear to
be in order.....right age birth place (except a minor discrepancy with Sara’s birth place between
1860 and 1870.)
Assuming the census records are correct, and errors are normal for the period......The family
lived in in Perry Township Armstrong County Pennsylvania until about 1851 when they moved
to Ohio, where a John, Joseph and Sara were born between 1852 and 1857. The family may
have been in between Ohio and Pennsylvania when Sara was being born....By 1862 the family
moved to West Virginia, which was just established out of the state of Virginia. This may have
been the reason for the families move from Ohio/Pennsylvania into the new state of West
Virginia. It would have to be assumed that the 1850 census record is incorrect on Joseph and
Elizabeth Graham’s birth date and birth state. Joseph Graham was born about 1808 in Maryland,
and not Massachusetts, and that his wife is about ten years younger born about 1818.
