Foreign Language Summer Reading The most effective way to learn a foreign language is to duplicate the way a baby learns his mother tongue. Input that is comprehensible is the key - whether reading a book or listening to a speaker or watching a movie. So this summer, when you watch a DVD with friends and family at home, select subtitles in either French or Spanish if available. Or if you are watching on your own, select French or Spanish audio together with English subtitles. You will pick up a lot of new language and reinforce what you already have learned. Browse Wikipedia in French or Spanish and read up on favorite topics about which you are very familiar. Take time to: check out bilingual library books, obtain a music CD in your language of interest, visit a church service in your language, go to a cultural event in your language, join a church short-term missions group to a country that speaks the language! In order to prepare for your Foreign Language class in the fall of 2012, please: 1. Purchase and read the following book 2. Write a summary in the target language (your French or your Spanish). Use ONLY language you know. 3. As a final paragraph write about how the main character changed during the course of the novel. What did he or she learn? Again, use your French/ Spanish. 4. Assignments are due the first week of school.
