FAQs about Reading Clinics & Tier III
What is a reading clinic?
A reading clinic is 30 minutes
of direct reading instruction,
with a small group, focusing
on specific reading skills and
strategies. Reading clinics are
considered Tier II instruction.
What is Tier III instruction?
Tier III instruction is an
additional 15-30 minutes of
direct reading instruction
developed to address each
student’s needs. This
instruction occurs 3 – 5
times per 5-day cycle.
Who teaches reading interventions?
All intervention groups (clinics and
Tier III) are taught by teachers or
highly-qualified paraprofessionals.
Instruction that is delivered by
paraprofessionals is planned by the
reading specialists.
Types of Reading Intervention Programs
My Sidewalks (Early Reading
Intervention and Level A)
This research-based, intensive reading
intervention program provides direct
instruction for young readers. “My
Sidewalks” addresses phonemic
awareness and beginning phonics at the
kindergarten and first grade levels.
Corrective Reading
This program provides intensive,
sustained instruction to help students
develop stronger decoding skills. It also
helps increase students’ fluency and
accuracy. This program is used with
second and third grade students.
Fundations
“Fundations” is a systematic, sequential,
multi-sensory method of teaching
reading and writing skills. This program
is used to teach phonics skills and
strategies to all first graders and those
second graders who need extra phonics
support.
SOAR to Success
“SOAR to Success” helps our third grade
students learn to apply comprehension
and decoding strategies and skills as they
read varying types of text.
Comprehension Groups
These clinics reteach and reinforce
comprehension strategies that are taught
during Core literacy instruction. Students
have the opportunity to develop these
skills and strategies with text at their
level.
Fluency Groups
These groups work on improving
students’ reading rates and accuracy.
Students work on repeated readings of
varying types of text, such as fiction,
nonfiction, poetry, and readers theater.
