1. Dynamic LCA
Fig. 1 shows the relevance to use time-dependent characterization factors (CFs) in order to
achieve temporal consistency of impact assessment when a fixed time horizon is chosen. CFs are
very sensible to the time period covered, e.g. carbon dioxide CF100, CF75 and CF25 are 1, 0.80
and 0.31 kg CO2 eq/kg emitted respectively (Levasseur et al 2010).

2. The power series expansion approach
In this approach, the mathematical expression of LCI for the environmental exchange i of a
product system can be expressed as (Suh and Heijungs 2007):

where each element of the sum represents the elementary flow i associated with the unit
processes (j, l, m …) of the respective tiers (0, 1, 2 …) of the supply chain, and b is an element of
matrix B. For example, the term (𝑒𝑖2 𝑏25 𝑏53)𝑓3 represents the amount of elementary flow i
generated by the unit process supplying the intermediate flow “2” (at tier 2) consumed by the
unit process supplying intermediate flow “5” (at tier 1), itself consumed by the unit process
supplying flow “3”, which is, in this case, set to the functional unit f3 (tier 0).
Using this approach, analytical tools such as structural path analysis (SPA), by which the
complex network system can be decomposed into individual paths, can be used (Suh and
Heijungs 2007). The infinite sum then represents the inventory contribution of all the paths in the
studied network system.
The power series expansion (PSE) algorithm converges under specific conditions (Suh and
Heijungs 2007) expected to be fulfilled in the LCA context from a practical point of view (Peters
2007). Bourgault et al. (2012) propose the systematic disaggregation methodology, a hybrid LCI
computation algorithm with user-defined cut-off criteria for path construction based on the
structure of the supply chain and the impact contribution of its components.
3. Main assumptions
General
 System processes were not defined with temporal parameters.
 The rate of output of unit processes was considered constant over time.
Storage
 No intermediate flows were assumed to be consumed or produced during the storage
phase.
Infrastructure
 The waste products of infrastructure processes were assumed to occur during the use
phase and the demolition.
 Maintenance processes were addressed over the lifespan of their infrastructure.
 When the specific information about duration of construction and demolition was not
available, these durations were estimated as the half value of the construction site
duration available in ecoinvent v2.2.
 Recultivation processes were considered at the end-of-life of mine infrastructures.
 The values of the land-use flows of infrastructure were used to estimate lifespan of
infrastructure when no specific information was available in the ecoinvent supporting
information document.

If an infrastructure had an intermediate input of infrastructure, only the lifespan of the
infrastructure modeled is taken into account.
Animal products
 Products of animal production (e.g. wool, sheep) are defined like agricultural products,
which means that the cycle of production is addressed the same way as crop rotation.
Transports
 No information about handling times and customs delays were considered for the
estimation of durations for transport processes; from this estimation, transport durations
were not fulfilling the 4 weeks criterion for temporal differentiation.
4. The choice of a threshold value to select the paths for temporal differentiation
Ideally, all the background unit processes and their distributions up to the 13th tier would be
considered for temporal differentiation. However, to save computing time, a criterion to select
paths for differentiation was defined as the minimum contribution of paths to the product system
impact score. A compromise between supply chain representativeness and computation time was
made. The criterion 2× 10−4 % was chosen according to the results of tests conducted on a
sample of 100 ecoinvent-derived product systems and shown in Fig. 4.
