SEMINAR Rethinking the future of the “Addizione di Niccolò”
Ferrara 7-8, 2015
Venue: Department of Architecture, University of Ferrara
via Ghiara 36, Ferrara
Aim of the seminar is to explore the issues that a project for the conservation and enhancement of the
rich heritage of an important part of the historic centre of Ferrara, called “Addizione di Niccolò”
(Niccolò’s urban addiction) will face in the future years.
Both the nature and the role of this area in the town ( see the attached note….) will be substantially
affected by two events:
a) the restoration of the historic headquarters of the University of Ferrara, severely damaged by an
earthquake, and their opening to a public use;
b) the creation of a new cultural pole in the town based on the presence in the area of ancient
mansions, monasteries, churches, museums, libraries and historical gardens and their reciprocal
connections.
The analysis and assessment will focus on possible future uses, the economic feasibility of the project,
the organization of the cultural pole and the problems connected with its management.
The outcomes of the seminar will be presented to the University and the City of Ferrara as a
contribution to the creation of the new cultural pole.
The exercise is also a contribution to the implementation of the UNESCO conservation strategy based
on the principles of Historic Urban Landscape (HUL). This area is in fact a portion of the historic centre
of Ferrara that has been declared World Heritage.
