2015 – 2016 SCHOLARSHIPS
The following scholarships offered by colleges and organizations require a nomination or an
endorsement of a limited number of seniors by Cannon School. In order to make it easier for
seniors during the busy fall application season to indicate their interest in being nominated for a
scholarship, seniors may apply for consideration through the process outlined below. The senior
may choose to indicate their interest in several of these scholarships at one time, or the senior
may elect to indicate their interest in a scholarship one at a time by completing the
requirements for this nomination process by the Cannon deadline indicated.
CANNON SCHOOL NOMINATION PROCESS
1. Seniors should read through this attached list of scholarships and determine their interest
and eligibility.
2. For detailed information about the scholarship and the criteria for eligibility, seniors
should go to each scholarship web site given and read the qualifications carefully.
3. If the senior is eligible to apply, they should indicate their interest in being considered as
a nominee on the enclosed “Request for Nomination” form. Complete the essays
indicated for that particular scholarship in the manner directed. Follow directions
carefully and thoroughly. Consult with your college counselor for assistance in writing
your nomination essays.
4. Submit the “Request for Nomination” form, essays required for each essay and your
activities resume to Haniya Mee by the end of the school day on the Cannon deadline
indicated. You may resubmit essays for subsequent scholarship deadlines. Mrs. Mee will
add your transcript and testing (if applicable) to your nomination packet for the
committee to review.
5. The scholarship committee, comprised of Cannon US faculty and administrators, will
meet and consider your request for nomination. You will be notified of the committee’s
decision in a timely manner in order to submit your official application to the college or
organization.
6. Please be advised that the US Faculty will also be asked to nominate suitable candidates
for these scholarships. Those students who have not requested nomination consideration
on their own will be contacted by Mrs. Mee and asked to consider submitting a “Request
for Nomination”. Having a faculty nomination does not advantage one senior over
another senior, it just ensures that all qualified seniors are given an opportunity to
compete for these scholarships.
SCHOLARSHIP ESSAYS
Put your name in the top left corner of each required essay submitted. Type the entire essay question at the
top of the page and then place your response below. Each essay should be a minimum of one page in
length unless otherwise noted. If your essay continues on to a second page, number each page and put your
name and essay question at the top of each subsequent page.
Place the “Request for Nomination” form on the top of all documents you submit. DO NOT STAPLE
DOCUMENTS TOGETHER. Secure with a paper clip only.
Essay #1 (required for all scholarships EXCEPT DANFORTH AND LEVINE)
Describe in detail a previous instance of discovery and growth. How did this experience change your
intellectual outlook or world view? Choose an experience unrelated to a specific class.
Essay #2 (required for: Belk Scholarship, Bryan Scholars)
Write a brief essay about yourself, focusing on one or two of your principal intellectual interests. Try to
give the selection committee a sense of how these interests enhance your life and how they relate to your
other interests or activities.
Essay #3 (required for: Belk Scholarship, Bryan Scholars, Jefferson Scholars)
Please discuss in detail a situation or an event that demonstrates your effectiveness as a leader, and how
that situation or event has shaped your conception of leadership. Be as specific as possible.
Essay #4 (required for: Morehead-Cain)
Morehead-Cain scholars show character by both admitting to and learning from mistakes. Describe a recent
situation you faced in a group or extracurricular activity that you wish you had handled differently.
Essay #5 (required for: Park Scholars)
Leadership is a core value of North Carolina State University. Please explain your personal view of
leadership and how this view has influenced you to make a difference in your home, school and/or
community.
Essay #6 (required for: Centennial Scholars and Park Scholars)
What are your educational interests and goals?
Essay #7 (required for: Jefferson Scholars and Morehead-Cain)
Tell us about a time when you helped a group of your peers accomplish an important goal. What was
necessary to your success? How would you describe your leadership role?
Essay #8 (required for: Trustee - Pick two of the following)
A - Proponents of cognitive enhancement–the use of “smart pills,” deep brain stimulation with electrodes,
brain-to-computer interfaces, and the like–describe a future with smarter, more productive, and higher
achieving individuals. Critics of the vision voice ethical concerns about such technologies, as well as the
social and professional consequences for those who cannot afford or choose not to use them. In your view,
should cognitive enhancements be widely available?
B - Pablo Picasso once said, “We all know that Art is not truth. Art is a lie that makes us realize truth, at
least the truth that is given us to understand.” Do you believe art is a lie? What kinds of truth may art (or if
you prefer, fiction, music, or poetry) cause us to realize?
C - The International Criminal Court, established in 2002 to prosecute those guilty of wartime atrocities
and crimes against humanity, has successfully tried and sentenced several former African leaders with
support of the international community. Despite endorsing the court’s rulings, however, some governments
believe that allowing their citizens to be tried by an international court would violate their own sovereignty.
Do you believe that all people should be subject to prosecution by international judicial bodies like the
International Criminal Court, or are there justifiable reasons for certain countries to protect their leaders
and military personnel from such jurisdiction
