Calder and Gryffe
Community Project
Project Description
The Calder and Gryffe Community Project will enable householders in Houston, Crosslee, Brookfield,
Lochwinnoch, Kilbarchan and Bridge of Weir, to reduce the amount of energy they use in their homes
and daily lives. This project will focus on areas of assistance requested by the community which will
be provided by LEAP.
Local residents have demonstrated an appetite for exploring options with a view to saving energy.
Many contributed to the design of initiatives contained in this application. LEAP's wide-ranging
community consultation included residents who have already engaged but also people who have not,
yet. This proposal will ensure additionally over LEAP's success to date through responding to
requests for support in neighbouring communities and addressing new demands from locals for
issues not yet tackled. Establishment of the Houston and Brookfield Environmental and Energy
Saving Steering Group will ensure the needs of those in the new areas continue to shape project
delivery.
The project will reduce carbon emissions by 3055 tonnes CO2e by helping local people make
structural and behavioural changes. These savings will deliver 5 outcomes within our community:
1. Energy and Education - Providing tailored, impartial wrap around Help at Home to reduce
domestic energy use by 18% through delivery of 1,100 energy efficiency measures and actions
across the community, including villages new to LEAP.
2. Local Sustainability – The project will increase community resilience by offering new
volunteering and learning opportunities; working towards self-sustainability of the Community Car
Club, and developing an information centre for Electric Vehicle use. LEAP will create an Energy
Efficiency Shop with revenue generated being put back into providing more free services for local
people.
3. Community Cohesion – LEAP will deliver a range of demand-led workshops and events
focusing on carbon reduction and adaptation. The initiatives will attract people of all ages,
backgrounds and abilities and will seek to be intergenerational where younger and older members of
the community can communicate and cross fertilise ideas and skills.
4. Centre of Carbon Excellence – LEAP will become a regional Centre of Carbon Excellence. It
will be the 'go to' place for information and advice in relation to community carbon reduction including:
energy saving, reuse, waste management and electric vehicles. It will be a resource for not only the
local community but also for aligned projects keen to exchange information and ideas.
5.
Reduce Waste – LEAP will enable the communities to reduce consumption of virgin materials
with fewer items sent to landfill through provision of demand-led reuse and increasing the amount of
food waste composted in local schools.
We will deliver these outcomes through community engagement in local people’s homes, at the drop
in centres available in Lochwinnoch, Bridge of Weir and Kilbarchan and by organising events and
gathering in community meeting points across all 6 villages.
Our Calder and Gryffe Community Project is designed to deliver lasting carbon savings, lasting
change in our communities and build our rural communities resilience to help ensure a sustainable
place to live and work for the future.
Community Development & Outreach Office Key Duties and Responsibilities:
The Community Development and Outreach Officer will report to and be required to assist the Project
Manager on all core project activities. The Officer will work closely with the Depute Project Manager

Network, develop 2 single issue projects, delivered jointly using all of the groups’ experience and
local knowledge;
1. Standard Energy Summary - Feedback from householders tells us their bills and energy
consumption are difficult to find and understand. Working within the Regional Peer Network
LEAP would develop a 1 page plain English standard household reports of annual energy
usage. This would be easily understood by householders, support organisations, debt
agencies and other suppliers, comparable between neighbours in similar property types. The
Network would then lobby OFGEM and Scottish Government to require the energy
companies to provide this information, in a standard format annually for each household they
supply.
2. Smart Meter Roll Out; The governments planned rollout of smart meters is an opportunity to
engage every household in the energy challenge, help us take control of bills in a market that
currently underserves us. LEAP would lead the network in identifying how best to support
householders before during and after installation of the new smart meters to ensure maximum
advantage is taken from the installation.
