Position Purpose
The youth engagement worker is an integral member of the VSA team that aims to provide
innovative and high quality youth engagement and youth case work activities across the VSA 16
week treatment program. As these events occur on week nights and at the weekends, the youth
engagement worker would be required to work out of normal business hours. This role also
incorporates supporting vulnerable young people through flexible and responsive case work.
Mentors or role models, who provide activities, cultivation of interest, awareness of moral and
cultural issues, and traits such as optimism, are among the central factors that support youth
engagement
Key Performance Indicators




Providing trauma sensitive care and support to young people who have suffered the
impact of volatile substance use.
Development, facilitation and evaluation of rostered activities and events aimed at
engaging young people.
A responsive and integrated evening program to compliment the day program, where by
activities, education sessions and outings will encourage further learning.
A major focus for the youth engagement workers will be to enhance the client’s life skills
and promotion of a healthy active lifestyle.
Collaboration and Communication
Internal:
 As part of the VSA team, the youth engagement workers will work closely alongside the
VSA Case Managers, sharing the common goal of achieving positive outcomes for the
clients.
External:
 VSA clients have many external organisations involved in their case management. The
youth engagement workers will have the ability to contribute to reports for external
departments and will also contribute to the clients MIMASO file for provision of information
and statistics. .
 Members of external bodies such as Police, Youth Justice, DCF,, NT Department of Health
NT Children’s Commission.
 Community Support services, as required to fulfill the needs of the individual

Major Responsibilities

Display strength based and client centred attitude by providing friendly, caring and
welcoming approach to clients.



Provide individual crisis support as required
Develop, facilitate and evaluate culturally sensitive programmed activities
Actively participate in the development, implementation and monitoring of Individual
planning meetings as required.
Model self care skills by assisting young people to plan and prepare meals and manage
personal hygiene and within their environment









Provide a continuous and close level of supervision and attend to client’s incidental needs
as required.
Monitor the health and safety requirements of clients both on CAAPS grounds and when
on outings.
Ensure that all medications taken by the clients we support are supervised according to
the Management of Medication policy and procedures.
Provide safe and efficient transport of CAAPS clients including supervised excursions as
per the client schedule
Oversee and record the exit and entry of all visitors and staff outside normal business
hours and maintain a record of all incidents, unusual activities or client absences.
Ensure all incidents/accidents and identified hazards are reported in accordance to the
WHS policy and procedure e.g. lodging incident reports.
Collect information and feedback and provide reports as directed by the Assistant
Manager or the Clinical Manager.
Observe the CAAPS vision, purpose and values within all work activities; this includes
adhering to strict confidentiality at all times.
Records Management responsibilities


Development, implementation and recording of programs and activities.
Use of MIMASO to identify added achievements/ issues of the clients through out of
business hours programs and case work.
Handover reports for every shift.
Critical incident reporting on Logiqc.
Updating client files.




Skills and Attributes








Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Energetic and well organised.
Demonstrated commitment to the duties and responsibilities of a YEW
Adopts a strength based approach to behaviour management
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others as part of a team and contribute to
team goals.
Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, competent administrative and
documentation skills.
Demonstrated ability to adapt communication styles and techniques to communicate
sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Willingness to maintain a drug free life style, a drug test will be conducted upon
employment and also at random intervals as requested by Management at any time.
Knowledge





Knowledge and skills in various methods of service delivery including case management,
casework, outreach, counseling etc particularly pertaining to youth .
Understanding of trauma sensitive care Awareness of legislation in dealing with Young
People
Conscious of and respectful of the exposure to personal and confidential information
Ability to understand legislative requirements of providing treatment under the Volatile
Substance Abuse Prevention Act.
Understanding of issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Qualifications


Certificate III or higher in youthwork, community services, mental health, alcohol and other
drugs, youth residential services or similar field.
Mental health awareness, assist, individual case support experience, group facilitation.
Experience required





Relevant experience in the alcohol and other drugs/community services/ mental
health/field in supervising a group of young people
Experience in planning activities aimed at engaging young people.
Experience in residential services and willingness to work shift work on a seven (7) day
roster
Access to current research on best practice in working with youth in particular Trauma
Informed care.
Computer skills including MSoft, data collection/input and record management skills.
