5th Grade Service Project
The recent Congressional sequester cut $60 million from the budget of the American Indian schools. For the Navajo Nation
in Arizona that means larger class sizes, fewer school buses and putting off building repairs. This sounds all too familiar
to Oldham County parents, BUT the differences are immense. The students at Tuba City Primary School, Home of the
Little Warriors, ride up to 70 miles one way to school over difficult roads, the buildings are in dire need of repair with
sections condemned, and class sizes have increased. These are just a few of the challenges they face every day. Sharlene
Navaho, principal of Tuba City Primary School, says that with all the cuts the teachers will have to buy all the scissors,
crayons, and other student supplies themselves. That is where Liberty Elementary 5th graders come in. We are organizing
the Bulldog community to collect school supplies for the Tuba City Primary School, we are going to do our small part to
change the world.
The 5th grade emailed Sharlene Navaho to ask what we could do and this was her reply:
Dear Liberty 5th graders,
Thank you for reaching out to my school and believe me the students and staff would appreciate any support
you and your school can provide. Teachers are always looking for the basic school supplies, pencils, erasers,
crayons, scissors, glue, folders with pockets, notebooks, dry erase markers, highlighters and index cards.
Any support you can provide is greatly appreciated!
