LRMS Students Win Elks Essay Contest
Alyssa Carlucci and Rheymon Barretto, students in Mr.
Malpass and Ms. Navas’ six grade classes, won an essay
contest sponsored by the Brick Elks. The topic of the
essay was “What does the pledge mean to me?” The
students received a certificate and $50 from Elks
Americanism Chairman Ken Genalo. The essay contest
was offered to 5th and 6th grade students in three
township schools. Great job, Alyssa and Rheymon!
TV’s “Chopped” Champ Judges
LRMS Iron Chef Competition
Students in Mrs. Stablie’s 8th grade cooking class
participated in an “Iron Chef” competition this week.
Student chefs worked in groups to research and create
recipes, then served their dishes to a group of judges.
They were especially excited to be judged by The Food
Network’s “Chopped” champ (and LRMS dad) Eric
Weatherspool! Students Jessica Anderson, Ryan
LeChien, Mikayla Oliveira, Lacey Wernoch, and William
Browne brought home the win with their tropicalinspired dishes: pineapple salsa, pineapple-lemon Jell-O,
and mango-pineapple drink. Yum!
Congratulations to the 2015 LRMS National Junior Honor Society Candidates

STEM in Action: ‘Excel’ing at Building Bridges
Students in Mrs. McCabe’s 6th grade Excel class worked hard
to engineer bridges out of balsa wood. They collaborated in
groups as “civil engineers” to create a company, design a
business model, draw up plans, then build the bridges. The
final bridges were judged on aesthetics, efficiency, and
strength. One bridge was able to support 10 water bottles!
Good job, students – you “nailed” it!
LRMS’ Joseph Cambria Named National
Geographic State Bee Semifinalist
LRMS is excited to announce that sixth grader Joseph
Cambria was a semifinalist in the National Geographic Society
Geography Bee! The contest was held on Friday, March 27 at
Rowan University. This was the second level of the National
Geographic Bee competition. The winner of the state Bee will
then compete in the televised 2015 National Geographic Bee
Championship final round!
School Bees were first held throughout the state to
determine each school champion – and Joseph was the
winner! In order to move on to the next level of the Bee,
Joseph took a qualifying test, which was submitted to the
National Geographic Society. The National Geographic Society
then invited the top-scoring students in each state to
compete in the second round of the Bee – and Joseph, with
his extensive and impressive knowledge of geography, made
the cut! Congratulations, Joseph!
“Day of the Dead”
Collaboration at LRMS!
Mrs. Deconde's 8th grade art students and Mrs. Bucco's
8th grade Spanish students collaborated to make “Day of
the Dead”-inspired piñatas. Students learned about the
significance of the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)
holiday in Mexican culture. They crafted piñatas using
papier-mâché and decorated them to resemble the
colorful candy “sugar skulls” (Calaveras) given as gifts to
friends and family on the holiday.
