advertisement

Objective: Reduce barriers to persons with a disability accessing goods, services and facilities

What’s working well?

What could we do better?

Library

New library is great; “beautiful building”

Ramp at new library

Hearing loop in library activity room, VicDeaf will now use rooms for deaf awareness events

Infrastructure

Redevelopment of the CBD which removed kerbing to improve access e.g. Hargreaves, Mitchell and Bull St

Increased focus from CoGB on physical access e.g. ramps

The tactile at pedestrians great for people with a vision impairment

Kangaroo Flat Sports Club and RSL Club good access

Art Gallery, good access

Easter Parade, easy to walk around

Eaglehawk pool is really good to access and use

Footpaths CBD

Disability car parks and ramps

Retrospective work upgrades

Bringing old buildings up to scratch

Better at identifying non-compliant buildings

Building inspector access trained and involved in design of new buildings

Education/Information

Access map for Bendigo (free) x 3

Public toilet Improvements x 15

The amount/location around the CBD, toilets behind tourist information centre has a step to get into

The type of doors used; heavy, handles can’t be round need to be D shaped, remove time on automated doors e.g. The Mall, Library has push button to get into toilet area but then a door handle to get into the toilet

Size; may comply but most are not functional, too small for larger chairs, can’t fit carers in there comfortably

Dirtiness; no bins for large pads, cleanliness not maintained, no shelving to put bags instead goes on floor

*In England, all disability organisations have swipe cards to access all accessible toilet facilities, ones which aren’t open to the general public; they contain gloves, wipes, hand wipes and a fold down bed for adults

*Maroondah City Council installed a changing places toilet; contains adjustable changing bed, tracking hoist system/or mobile hoist, adequate space, centrally placed toilet, screen or curtain, wide tear of paper for to cover bench, large waste bin for disposable pads, non-slip floor

Communication Access x 26

Plain English; came up 7 times; Scope offers this service can get documents to gain the communication access symbol

Large print; unable to see small print e.g. words and

Getting around portal

Community grants program, asks how the project will benefit/support cultural diversity and people with a disability

Accessible restaurant guide is good, but needs to advertised more and in hard-copy at key locations

More people are being educated about mental health and physical disabilities x 2

People are becoming more aware of who may need help, therefore more likely to help

CoGB run seminars, Murray Mountain Forum, educate people on how to design and build public spaces in terms of access

Companion Card x 2

Occupational Therapists to do HACC assessments

Staff training

Customer service x 3

Promotional documents, vision Australia reviewing and providing feedback

Front counter design; hearing aids

Website readspeaker

Events

Easter Festival; accessible toilets and viewing area for people with a disability

Improved emergency management process/service for vulnerable members in the community

Other good examples throughout Greater Bendigo

Marketplace is good, unless lift is out of order. Although some individual shops are difficult to negotiate.

Safeway – trolleys for disabled. numbers on brochures, business cards, some signs e.g. scooter recharge point in the library

Internet; not affordable for everyone, some people are computer illiterate

Website; hard to navigate

Caption videos; VicDeaf offer this service can be done to important CoGB videos

Promote services; Scooter recharge points, all abilities toilets, restaurant guide

Visual cues; in publications, bulletins etc.

Test equipment; hearing loop in buildings that aren’t used too often

Technology; apps are good to inform people

Buildings, facilities & services x 23

Library; end ramp is dangerous, no covered verandah outside when waiting with clients for taxis, high roof can make people with a disability feel uncomfortable, anxious

& overwhelmed; missed opportunity to celebrate something good to do with access, excellence in function and accessibility

CoGB buildings; steps to get inside, lifts too small for large chairs, some have no all abilities toilets, little attention given to the access needs of small towns, don’t talk about cost talk about being the right thing to do, need to increase standard we do things, not just meet the minimum standard

Lighting; no lighting around Heathcote Health, safety issue

New projects; stronger awareness of disability access, continued attention to accessibilities

Heritage buildings; lifts and ramps

Design over accessibility; small things slip through in

streetscape and capital works, new buildings should not have access issues x 3

Services; Remote access services and rural facilities aren’t as well fitted out, not as user friendly when compared to the CBD; digital implementation of services to rural areas, businesses having access by council on how they can provide these things e.g. brail, large print, extend services;

Scope, VicDeaf

Disaster relief; Ask community to work with CoGB during the CFA relocation process, natural disasters o Can CoGB offer assistance to service providers who bring vulnerable people into the CBD during bushfires, floods etc.

Public Transport x 12

Disabled friendly buses; at the right height from the bus and the footpath, have an afterhours service, public transport and taxis use a lot of a person’s pension, better internal transport for moving within small towns

With the introduction of NDIS, service provider buses will no longer be in use, good for people’s wellbeing to have a community bus, can CoGB bus be hired out?

Train service extend to other areas

Taxi call out, instead of running the whole bus network

*Mornington Peninsula Council has a community bus that people can ring and order, cheaper for the individual plus council for not having to have a whole bus network

Public Spaces & Events x 10

Hargreaves Mall; boulders used aren’t good for people with a vision impairment, not enough luminous contrast

Easter Festival; quiet spot for people with autism

Australia Day; make sure stalls are accessible for people in

a wheelchair and that they can see the stage

Park for Play; all abilities playgrounds

Lake Weeroona; ramp at the tram stop is a different height than the tram

Bendigo Show; disabled parking in a good place, but wasn’t able to get into the area, poles refrained person from entering with a wheelchair, “continue the thought”

Companion Card; needs expanding and more promotion x

2

Groups who actively promote inclusiveness should have reduced fees and charges, or have some type of incentive

Footpaths/Gutters, Roads & Parking x 17

Footpaths/Gutters; no tactiles certain areas, no footpaths joining up to bus stops, curbs not wheelchair friendly

Booth, Queen & Williamson St, no footpaths around

Heathcote Health, bluestone not good for wheelchairs; inconsistent in small towns

Roads; safety of crossing (Harcourt, Pall Mall, Williamson)

Parking; not wide enough or enough spaces, in the CBD and/or Marketplace safe taxi drop off points, parking outside library have been shortened, not long enough for buses, safety issue

Potential advocacy for CoGB

Restaurants Mitchell St, step into them, someone has to go check the restaurant before they eat there

Dragon City lanes – step up to enter – ramp poor.

Railway station car park – poor visibility when people in wheelchairs using crossing.

Also problems boarding trains in wheelchairs

Footbridge over train track inaccessible, have to cross

over tracks; create footbridge automated gates to able to cross at any time

Accommodation doesn’t accommodate for people with a disability

Taxi drivers – taxi need upper window, feel excluded and disconnected from outside environment when in a wheelchair in a taxi

Confusion with taxi’s; street signage, Melbourne based bad for people with a disability trying to explain their location to an automated system; heightens anxiety levels

Accessible communication cards for taxi drivers

NDIS, no funding for service provider transport

Many shops aren’t accessible for wheelchairs

No access to Auslan interpreters in afterhours emergency at the hospital
