Head of CIPD London
CIPD in pursuit of its purpose to ‘Champion better work and working lives’ continues
to strengthen its voice, reach, and impact across the UK whilst recognising the need
for greater levels of presence, engagement and relevance at a local level. London is a
city of great diversity where challenges and opportunities give it a unique
complexion. The Head of CIPD London role is an exceptional opportunity for an
individual to play a strategic role in further enhancing the development of CIPD in
London, working with and supporting the CIPD volunteer network in its delivery of
local member services. The role will be instrumental in shaping and positioning the
CIPD as the leading authority in standards, the professionalisation of HR, and
‘Championing Better Work and Working Lives’ strengthening our ability to reach
and connect with members, customer groups, Policy makers and other key
collaborators.
He/she will work closely with CIPD HQ and the CIPD London Volunteer Network to
develop and deliver a CIPD London strategy in line with the CIPD’s overarching
purpose, vision and strategic priorities. This role will enable us to share CIPD’s
extensive research, and connect our insights to the employment and skills
challenges and opportunities of London. In addition it will support the Volunteer
network in the provision of a full spectrum of CPD activities through a holistic
London events schedule and greater connectivity to CIPD Centres and Students.
The Head of CIPD London will already be alive to the unique challenges and
opportunities that London presents having previously worked in businesses and
roles that have exposed him/her to London Government personnel and
stakeholders, key London organisations and a variety of business leaders. As a result
he/she will already be well networked with a track record in creating value and
success through his/her collaborations.
We are looking for an individual with professional and personal gravitas, values
driven behaviour and the leadership capability to take on this challenging and
exciting role where collaboration (both internally and externally), influencing skills,
and communication will need to be finely honed. Experience at a senior level in
like-minded, like-purposed businesses with similar activities and market place
approach (where volunteering is present) would be highly advantageous. Given
London’s status as a global hub of banking and financial services, experience working
in/with this industry would also be a valuable asset.

The priorities for this role will be:
1. Regional strategy development in collaboration with HQ colleagues and senior
Volunteer network personnel.
2. Engagement with Volunteers, members, and key marketplace stakeholders in
Government, Business and Education.
3. Development of Partnerships and Collaborations that build CIPD brand value
4. Growth against a balanced scorecard of measures; membership, member
engagement, revenues and brand equity through a strengthened CIPD effort in
collaboration with volunteers.
5. High developed team leadership.
6. Budget management.
Key responsibilities
1
Work with the Market Development Director UK, other relevant HQ
departments/colleagues, and senior Volunteer network personnel to develop
and implement a strategic business plan for London to deliver greater
connectivity, relevance and impact with members, customers, and a broad
spectrum of other market players and stakeholders.

Build and lead a CIPD employed team that engages with the 7 local London
branch network to focus on building member impact through a more unified
and consistent London events schedule, ensuring that events and activities
are aligned with the CIPD’s strategic aims and priorities, deliver on local
member needs and meet all legal and charity requirements.

Engage and partner where relevant with a variety of customers and market
players (GLA, organisations, collaborators, academic centres and students,
other professional bodies) to raise the profile of CIPD’s work to champion
better work and working lives (building commercial revenues where
appropriate).

Co-ordinate the views of HR practitioners through the branches to inform the
London public policy agenda, liaising with Policy advisers and members to
ensure that views are articulated to the public policy team and through to the
London GLA as appropriate. Champion the local delivery of UK policy
campaigns, specifically Learning to Work (Steps Ahead and Inspiring the
Future) and leverage this important agenda into the GLA.

Collaborate with the London Branch Chairs (and newly established Working
Party) to establish effective working practices across the Branch network and
with HQ

Provide ongoing advice, support and guidance to London Branch chairs and
committee members to connect the local/regional and national CIPD agendas
and achieve the maximum impact at both strategic and operational levels.

Work with HQ Branch Development team to evaluate, develop and
implement a range of training and development activities that support the
capability of London branch officers and committee members in their
volunteering roles.

Provide insight and intelligence about London to ensure the CIPD Leadership
team are attuned to the needs of CIPD London, where improvements can be
made and where opportunities can be leveraged.

Contribute to a variety of internal CIPD strategic projects where customer,
member and/or marketplace perspectives are required. In particular, provide
inputs on the strategic direction of the ‘Regional’ agenda as it develops and is
implemented across the rest of the UK.

Measure overall success against a balanced scorecard of 4 key criteria; a
strengthened volunteer effort, greater member engagement, increased
commercial revenues, and enhanced CIPD brand visibility and equity
CANDIDATE PROFILE
Previous experience

Experience at a senior level in like-minded businesses (eg Professional
Development, Charitable status, Think Tanks, Industry policy) with a similar
purpose and suite of ambitions/activities would be highly advantageous.
Obvious passion and alignment to the purpose and ambitions of the CIPD to
Champion Better Work and Working Lives as demonstrated through previous
career choices.

Proven track record of delivery and success demonstrating leadership skills,
commercial acumen and a suite of positive behavioural traits aligned to the
values of the CIPD (Purposeful, Agile, Collaborative, and Expert).

Evidence of proactively initiating and developing relationships and partnerships
with excellent influencing skills and relationship management capability

Well developed team management experience and capabilities, with clear
demonstration of inspiring a strong team worth ethic, encouraging team spirit
and enabling overall team success
Personal qualities

An experienced and visible and leader who is able to build, enthuse and
motivate a team, respectful of volunteering contributions and limitations.

majority of time however in the marketplace engaging with HQ colleagues, Branches,
