Marine Zones/ecosystems Advertisement (15pts)
The ocean is divided into many different zones and ecosystems based upon the different
characteristics found in each one. These characteristics are favored by some organisms and can pose
challenges for others. For example, the photic zone of the ocean has a lot of light, which is great for
producers who need it to photosynthesize, but all this light may make it hard for a fish to stay hidden
from predators. In this assignment you will create an oceanic brochure detailing a zone or ecosystem
which will either be a Realty Brochure OR an Adventure Brochure (open to other ideas as well).
Realty Brochure: Highlight major selling points of each oceanic zone as if you were trying to sell it to a
potential buyer. Put a positive spin on the characteristics that define each zone.
Ex: Enjoy the soothing sounds of waves in the intertidal zone!
OR
Adventure Brochure: This should be catered to adrenaline junkies who like extreme environments. Put
an exciting spin on the characteristics that define each zone.
Ex: Do you dare to try and survive the violent crashing waves of the rugged intertidal zone?!
What to include
To make the brochure, take 2 pieces of paper and fold them in half (hamburger style) together,
creating a book. Each page should be dedicated to one zone. You will be assigned one of the following
zones; sandy beach, rocky beach, coral reef, salt marsh community, mud flat community, mangrove
community, intertidal zone, neritic zone and oceanic zone
Include in the brochure:
-
A simple sketch of the zone (basically just showing where in the ocean it is found)
A description of the zone including at least 3 traits that make each zone different from the
other zones
Creativity with the descriptions
An enticing cover, including your names
The total point value of this assignment is 15 points.
Research; Using the textbooks in the classroom, research your environment and gather important
details that you will want to include in your brochure. Include abiotic factors that greatly affect the
environment (tides, sunlight, decomposing materials, etc.) as well as biotic factors (what kind of
neighbors will they have or have to avoid). Be creative, have fun.
Rough Outline; Create a rough outline of what your brochure will look like in preparation for
tomorrow. It can be as simple as designating what info will go on what page (location, climate..)
