United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Transport Unit
UNEP is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at
the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental
policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues
to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
UNEP Transport Unit employs a 3-fold strategy (Avoid-Shift-Improve) to address externalities
from road transport. The project “Sustainable Policy Development for Non-motorized Transport
and Road Safety” aims at:



Reducing and avoiding demand for emission-intensive transport modes while
facilitating the increased mobility of people, goods and information and ensuring that
efficient transport is devised around smart infrastructure and mobility planning;
A shift from more energy intensive and environmentally harmful modes of transport
to less polluting and more efficient modes;
Reducing impact through improved, cleaner transport technology and policy
solutions.
