Pikes Peak Community Development (PPCD) Initiative Mission Develop a comprehensive set of grant making, technical assistance and capacity building activities to address shared concerns and quality of life issues in the southeast area of El Paso County. Purpose Build on El Pomar Foundation’s active and visible role creating opportunities through proactive philanthropy and innovative partnerships with a broad representation of leaders from civic and community-based organizations that serve the southeast area of El Paso County. PPCD Advisory Group El Pomar Foundation convened a group of civic minded professionals to provide expertise, resources, information and strategies to assist in identifying and addressing quality of life issues that impact Southeast El Paso County. 1. Tom Anderson – Colorado Springs Community Business Leader PPCD Advisory Group Grantmaking Opportunity $150, 000 grant total ($50,000 grant each year over three years); $10,500 “Merit Grant” total ($1,500 awarded by each Advisory Group member to a nonprofit of their choice each year over three years) PPCD Advisory Group Objective The PPCD Advisory Group’s focus is Youth and Education opportunities in Southeast El Paso County. The PPCD’s Advisory Group interest is to identify and support ways to “connect students and families to post-secondary educational opportunities”. The PPCD Advisory Group has developed a comprehensive approach to help high school students, counselors, and families learn more about scholarships, financial aid and student support services in order to successfully attend and remain enrolled in post-secondary education. PPCD Advisory Group Goals Connect students and families in Southeast El Paso County to post-secondary education opportunities. Prepare students to understand post-secondary education opportunities including financial literacy, self assessment, family involvement, scholarship fairs, college admissions and student support. Provide students transitional support from high school and facilitate self-advocacy to promote their success at the post-secondary level. College Readiness and Success Program The Pikes Peak Community Development (PPCD) Advisory Group has developed a comprehensive approach to College Readiness and Success. The program consists of three components: 1) a workshop series, 2) a resource guide, and 3) support for the Educating Children of Color Summit. Target Audience: Pikes Peak Area High School Students from districts 2, 3, 8 and 11, with a focus on students and military (active duty and retired) families who identify as Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian/Pacific Islander and Native American. The student should meet one or more of the following characteristics: o Socioeconomic diverse background o Military family o First generation college student o Homeless or highly mobile family o Immigrant family o Special needs, as identified by the school district College Readiness and Success Workshop Series Action Plan: The workshop series will address a range of topics including college success, self advocacy, financial literacy, pre-collegiate resources, and retention. This comprehensive workshop series will consist of four workshops at no cost to students and families. All workshops are facilitated by higher education professionals and are designed to expose students to resources and opportunities for post secondary education. The workshop series will serve 140 students. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks will be provided. The College Readiness and Success Workshop Series is designed to support and encourage: Students who are interested in developing academic and leadership skills; need assistance with goal orientation and organization; currently have a “C or better” grade point average. Parents and family involvement. Principals/teachers /counselors to serve as “Student Recruitment Coordinators.” Resource Guide Action plan: Create, design and disseminate (hard copy and online) a comprehensive resource guide to identify programs, organizations, and events that connects youth to post-secondary education opportunities. Educating Children of Color Summit Action Plan: Provide support to the Educating Children of Color Summit and encourage all workshop participants to attend the annual summit. The summit seeks to dismantle the cradle to prison pipeline for children of color, and children in poverty, through education.
