GUIDELINES FOR DEANS / DIRECTORS  CHAIRS /MANAGERS
GENERAL
Although Program Innovation Funds are normally awarded to instructors or other non-supervisory staff,
there is a significant and important role to be played by Deans, Directors, Chairs, and other College
managers in the application, selection, and monitoring of PIF projects. In accordance with College policy,
a one-over-one approval process is followed.

1. CHAIRS / MANAGERS
a. Review the application to ensure that the proposed project falls within PIF eligibility criteria.
b. Check the budget information to ensure that sufficient and correct detail is provided.
c. If backfill is requested, ensure that this is feasible in your area.
d. Check that appropriate service areas have been consulted as necessary.
e. Check that the suggested timelines are feasible for completion of the project.
f. Send back for revision if necessary.
g. Provide comments to support the application, and forward electronically to your Dean or
Director.
2. DEANS / DIRECTORS
a. Review the application to ensure that the proposed project falls within PIF eligibility criteria.
b. Send back for revision if necessary.
c. Add comments, if desired, in support of the application.
d. If there is more than one application from your area, rank in order of preference for funding and
note the ranking on the application in the space provided.
e. Forward the application to the Dean, Centre for Teaching Excellence, Innovation & Research
(TEIR) at ncooke@rrc.ca

SELECTION
DEANS
a. Deans are ex officio members of the PIF Review Committee.
b. The Committee will meet shortly after the published submission deadline.
c. While every ranked application will be considered by the Review Committee, signatures will only
be required for successful applications.
d. Successful applicants will be notified by letter and provided with information on how to access
funding together with guidance on Red River College processes for expenditures.
C.
MONITORING
Please note that all project-related contracts and expenditures must be approved through
the Dean of TEIR and NOT by the Dean / Director to whom the successful applicant reports.
1. CHAIRS / MANAGERS
a. Recognise that PIF projects and PIF timelines must be respected.
b. Familiarise yourself with the project budget and procedures.
c. In a one-over-one process, verify that any work for which payment is being claimed has been
successfully completed.
d. Provide comments to support any request for extension or deferral of the project.
e. Monitor timelines to ensure that the project is on schedule and has been completed.
f. Ensure that any reports and/or materials or products created during the project are submitted
to the Dean of TEIR in a timely fashion.
2. DEANS / DIRECTORS
a. Be aware of all approved PIF projects in your area together with their timelines for completion.
b. Provide support to departments in conducting any PIF project according to the timelines.
